Default question about wheel bearing

ok my dad has an 07 tc, auto, its bone stock with roughly 66k miles on it, there is a growl at low speeds that turns into a roar, what are the chances that the rear wheel bearings are shot?

what are the chances? pretty good actually! There are some on this forum that have had them go around 20k miles, it's not uncommon. Have you checked the play of the bearings?

its the rear wheel bearings, you have to buy them already made into the hub for some reason

If the wheel bearing doesn't get replaced then it can eventually seize up and F up a lot more parts costing you more in the end.

if you take hard turns to the left or right, you can usually isolate which wheel bearing it is when the weight of the vehicle is transferred. but yeah, that will suck if it's both rear.

yup you're the one i was thinking of, thanks! But i've also heard of others at the dealership that have gone bad too. The techs were wondering if Toyota had a bad batch of them. They said they saw it on the corolla or camry before (forgot which one they said)

yeah the bearing itself is like $30 and the labor is like a little over an hour. so say like $130 for labor. Not sure why someone is telling you $300! Unless they're saying for both front ones.

The rears are self contained units with the lugs already part of the hub/bearing. No need to press anything in with the rears, it's really an easy swap for the rears. The fronts require taking apart the front suspension (steering knuckle, brakes, ball joint, etc) to have the steering knuckle on a press to press out the old bearing and press in the new one. Hope that helps

Oh and after it's put back together the alignment has to be checked since the camber is most likely out. Only on the front procedure not the rears.

its the rears that are making the noise, do they not have TSB out on this? you'd think if a bunch were going out...

Mine sound like they are coming from the front, but how do you isolate it and diagnose it as the rear?

are you sure it's just not your tires making noise?

As tires get older/balder, do they make more noise? I am in need of new tires. I'd feel better buying new tires instead of bearings.

Yes as tires wear, they can get louder. Run your hand over the tire tread, see if you feel any scalloping or texture. If so, then yes that could be the source of your noise. Tires can make a droaning noise as they get wear.
