Default Question Regarding Camber

My current dillema: i need to get a safety check, in order to get that i need recon, in order to get that i need an alignment. i cant get an alignment because my camber is negative 2.7 degrees.

i need advice on a solution to get my safety check. i can either buy aftermarket upper rear arms to allow for less camber (which will cost alot).

OR... i can throw my stocks back on, get the alignment and then swap my new wheels after i get the safety.

obviously i want to opt for the 2nd option. but i need help understanding what causes negative camber. My wheel specs in the rear are 18x9.5 +30 and im lowered on S-Techs.

are my new wheels the source of negative camber? or is it the fact that im lowered? if the cause is from both the wheels and the drop, then which of them affects the camber more?

Thanks

Have you ever gotten an alignment?
That's a lot of camber.
How low is your suspension?
Too low, and your suspension won't work properly. 2" is about the max, otherwise, you'll hit the bumpstops and the car will handle worse. I've learned this the hard way, getting a spanking at a big race.
No, your wheels don't cause camber.

the camber is caused because your lowered. you should be able to get an alignment even with that much camber. ive read somewhere on here that you can adjust the camber on sciontc's from under the car im not exactly sure how. but when i got my alignment they brought it from 2.6 to 1.4 at a normal alignemnt shop. best of luck. also that much camber is prolly gonna give you camber wear on your tires so be prepared to get new tires sooner.

Time for a rear alignment
By your equipment, I'm guessing you're not racing. Just have them minimize the rear camber, since it doesn't look like you have crash bolts in the front.
The front camber should be more than the rear.

i'm lowered on s-techs. i dont race, its a DD.
i've never gotten an alignment since i lowered my car.
the alignment shop said they maxed out the rears. i ended up buying aftermarket rear upper arms.

What is your camber now at?
You'd be surprised at how streetable a racer with around 4x stock rates can be !

Did you try to get the rear camber down to reasonable numbers before you bought the parts?

Why would they not let you pass at -2* that you just now got it to, do they actually measure the camber? As long as the tires have good tread you shouldn't have to worry about it. I'd have taken the car in as is and if there was any issue with that then it's not a big issue to be fixed. You'd think they'd have an issue with the tire stretch before anything.

i went to 2 diff locations for an alignment. both said they couldnt because i had too much camber.

my tires are brand new, and are stretched. but that didnt seem to make any difference lol.

It's more dangerous to drive on stretched tires than with 2 degrees of camber...

That is one of the most stupid things I've read that an alignment shop could have told you, they are there to fix that . Now there may be a limit on getting it corrected because of how LOW the car is, the factory hardware can only correct so much, which is why you went with the aftermarket rear camber arms. I was fine with my rear camber being left alone at -1.9 as I'm barely tucking tread even though -1.5 probably wouldn't have tire rub fender anyway, that was his concern though, and I said fix the toe then. I think it's best to have left those shops that said that though. I heard you mention "recon", only time I heard of that is someone located in Hawaii, is that your current location?

yup im from hawaii. over here we're required to get "recon" if we modify our cars suspension and other performance parts to ensure the car is safe to drive.

im only dropped 2-2.5 inches. yeah the 2nd shop i went to tried to fix the camber with the stock rear arms but couldnt get it to an acceptable degree. thus why i am forced to install aftermarket rear upper arms.

Did they state what an "acceptable degree" is? 2 degrees is not extreme.

Ok. That is a bit much. I'll have to reduce the rear camber on my own tC & increase the front to about 2!
