Default Strange Braking...?

I noticed if I'm going quick and hit a bump and stop all of a sudden.. i feel like a clatter or metal on metal feeling in the brake pedal as if it hit the floor or something... also felt the same thing one time when I had to get on the brakes on the freeway when someone pulled in front of me... braking otherwise is fine.... is this normal.. seems to have happened in my xB too from what I can remember..

It's the ABS and EBD doing its job. The ABS on the tC is quite sensitive. Do you have any suspension mods?

Is this your first car with ABS? Are you sure its NOT the ABS just doing its thing?

Do you need new brake pads? Resurface the rotors? anything along those lines?

If its not the ABS and your brakes don't need simple routine maintenance, i'd bring it in.

That's exactly what it is.. and yes this is my first ABS car... i'm going to attempt to disable it... i'm also going to build up the brake system as the stock system is weak.. i only have 4,000k on the car and I've looked at the rotors/pads and i'm good... just need something much stronger IMO...

Need to talk to the guys @ dezod about getting hooked up..

Yea, go get some better pads if you want to upgrade the brakes. If you have some money, get the stoptech stage 2 kit and if you really have money, go get a full big brake kit. Even pads will help, but the bbk will do a lot more i'm sure.

You don't want to disable ABS, it has been proven to be a very effective safety feature that actually decreases stoping distances based on tests and furthermore detects and gets you out of hydroplaning much faster than a person can. The only mistake that it makes, is when you hit a bump while hitting the brakes pretty hard, the ABS can kick in when its not needed and extend braking distances. Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend not disabling it. If it were a negative feature, the high end cars would not have it. Hyundai accents don't have ABS, Mercedes S55 AMG does - get my point?

It seems that you're looking for that brake upgrade; not to disable abs

ya dude i completely know how u feel... there times in gravel im going 10mph and it kicks in... its stupid... if disableing it isnt too much trouble i might look into it... i know for a fact if i didnt have ABS i just woulda spun out on the freeway instead of getting in an accident.. then again it was 2:00am and he was the only other truck on the road so maybe it was ment to be lol... good luck

and learn from my mistake... abs kicks in heavy when the road is slightly wet.. so be careful

yes, check your tires. Tires are probably one of the biggest upgrades you can make... and I'm just talking about handling. Tires have a HUGE effect on braking distance. How bald are your tires? Chances are they're slipping earlier than usual, forcing the ABS to kick in.

Me? I've only had the ABS kick in once, and that was when I expected it to... i.e., I floored my brake pedal to avoid hitting someone in front of me. Luckily, I was already at relatively slow speeds and following distance, so I was able to stop.

Never take chances with your braking system, and your tires!

I came over a blind hill going 50 and traffic was stopped on the other side. The OH SH*T phenomenon kicked in, and I hit the brakes. Only time i've had ABS kick in off of iced roads.
Kicking in on gravel is expected. It's not stupid in my opinion; it's likely that your stopping distance on gravel (if you needed it seriously) would be reduced if ABS were on the car.

ok, firstly, the ABS only kicks in WHEN THE TIRES LOSE TRACTION. PERIOD. If you wrecked with the ABS pumping solid, the tires would've LOCKED UP without the ABS there, and I GUARANTEE you would've wrecked, probably worse than you did. Tires don't screech in the rain when they lose traction under braking at high speeds, by the time you reacted to the loss of traction, you would've already plowed through what you were attempting to stop for.

again, ABS activates when the tires HAVE ALREADY lost traction, not before, and not when it "thinks" it might - without ABS the tires would lock up, period. Anyone who says they can stop a car better than ABS in low-traction circumstances is talking out their ___.

for other people's sake, don't disable your ABS. Wait, what the hell am I saying, you CAN'T disable the ABS unless you install a bias valve, and even then, it's locked into the ECU and you'd have to do some fine trickery to fool it.

^ you can just disable/remove the sensor. You'll get a dash light but you won't have abs anymore.

Its not worth doing imo, it will save your @$$ one day.

THANK YOU! Exactly what I was thinking... And better rotors and pads will just make the tires lock up easier! Get better rubber if anything...

no ABS = car in safe-mode. Enjoy driving it at 12AFR open and closed loop.

Well I've decided to go for better tires (since I have new rims) and go with a "stage II" type of brake kit. I just need better stopping power, that's the bottom line...

The only way you can stop faster than ABS is if you're a trained, well experienced racing driver, which I'll just take a guess here and say none of us are!

And yes, probably the *only* situation where ABS will be detrimental you is when you lock the tires driving around on gravel. But then again, I don't expect anyone is going 45 on a gravel road...
