Default Sway bar swap?

Sorry if this has been answered before (I searched please don't flame) but has anyone swapped the sway bar from an automatic tC to a manual tC? Also is there any significant reduction in body roll?

To my understanding, the rear sway bar on an automatic is 20mm where as the manual has an 18mm rear sway bar. Also from what I've read the TRD sway bar is 19mm.

The reason I'm asking is because I want to save some money but upgrade the handling of my tC.

Currently I have TRD springs, EBay front strut bar & a ingalls 4 point rear brace (best suspension mod so far).

Any comments or feedback would be appreciated ;)

Hey I have a 2011 xb lower on TRD. You think if I use something similar to the Ingalls brace, would it improve the handling?

I wouldn't see why not but you'll probably have to fab one up because I'm not sure if they make one for your vehicle. The 4 point brace helps keep the back flat during cornering. It's a night and day difference.

Thanks. Another company makes one. I'll give it a try in a few months

I couldn't tell you man, sucks this forum is so dead that no one will answer your question.

I had no idea that they were a different size. If you can get one for cheap it might be worth a swap just to see for yourself. If not, I would just save for an aftermarket.

I would be curious to find out as well. Searching archived threads brings up a few other people saying the same thing, but none with somebody who has actually swapped them.

Look for a wrecked auto tC on craigslist. They are fairly common and sway bars tend not to get damaged in most wrecks.

There are a lot of auto yards around my area. They seem to be pretty cheap. I've seen them go for around 20-50 dollars. Also there are 20mm polyurethane bushing they sell on eBay.

I got under my car today and measured the rear sway bar on my manual tC with a micrometer and it was indeed 18mm. So the next part to figure out is what size the automatics have. It would be helpful if someone could get under their auto tC and measure the rear sway bar. If not I'll do it sometime next month when I can get some time to to go to a auto yard.

Send a email to parts@trdsparks.com asking to confirm the size difference. It's probably not going to make that much of a difference, but you can find the auto swaybar on eBay cheap.

Thanks for the suggestion but I think I'll do the legwork and physically measure one myself to be 100% sure.

I've seen them pretty cheap on eBay as well and the nice thing is a lot of the dismantling yards that sell them on eBay are local to my area (Sacramento).

I didn't really find a big difference in body roll, but it did make a big difference in rotation. The car understeered much less, and I thought it was a significant upgrade you could do to these cars handling-wise. On the street, I really didn't notice a massive difference (although still noticeable). Then again, I really don't drive fast or push at all on the street. In auto-x events it made a massive difference. If the auto tC rear sway is indeed bigger than the TRD it will be noticeable. It's been a good 5 years since I had the TRD sway, but I would've guessed it was a 20-22mm bar. Not sure though.

Another thing you could do to improve handling that is relatively cheap is a proper alignment. These cars are pretty camber challenged in the front to begin with since it's a McPherson strut setup. The TRD springs are pretty good for handling as they're not too low, nice choice. I had the Hotchkis springs and they were too low. I lost a lot of camber mid-corner and it was definitely in the wrong part of the camber curve.

hey sorry about everything being dead around here! To answer your question the rear is a 20mm from an automatic, and as you found out the manual had an 18mm rear sway bar size. Lots of guys back in 04 when the tc1 came out were doing this swap. It will bolt right up!
