Default New problem haha

Ok. Got another problem. I got my steelies filled up all ready to be put on. So decided to go ahead and put them on today. Aright no problem. Just gona go out and buy a torque wrench to take off my rims since I can use the tire iron since I got special lugs. I was expecting a torque wrench to be like... oh i don't know. 40 60 tops. Not 120 minimum. So I'm like eh w.e I won't torque my lugs for now, I'll borrow my friends torque wrench when he gets a chance. So I grab this thing that fits the socket for my lugs. Try to take em off nothing. Nothing at all. didn't even get a little peep. I keep trying but still nothing. I'm thinkin wtf am I too weak? So i let my friend give it a try and same for him. Nothing at all. I can't get the lugs off my rims if my life depended on it. What can I use to get these things off short of a torque wrench? Man if I had to fix a flat I'd be royally screwed.

Go pick up some PB Blaster or WD-40 if you have it on hand. I'd prefer PB Blaster though. Spray it deep down in the socket, let it sit about 30 mins then give them all another shot of it, sit about 15, then put the lug wrench back on, if still does turn, try taking a hammer to, start gentle and progressivly hit it a little harder each time (IN THE DIRECTION IT COMES OFF ) The force/vibration impact from the hammer should help break the rust grip in the threads. When using these sprays though, make sure you wipe it off the rim face asap with mild soapy water to avoid possible spotting or staining. Oh and when/if you get the lugs off go over each wheel stud with a good bit of soapy water then rinse and let them completely dry to make sure none of the lubricant is left behind, as that may potential allow the lugnuts to back off over time and travel. Hope you get them off Oh and don't let a shop use and air impact gun on them again, more than likely they have over torqued your lugnuts, very common thing, just hope they didnt destroy the threading in the process.

just to make sure, you know it's lefty loosey, righty tighty.

there is a gorilla wrench that you can buy that helps get you alot more leverage and such.

^^ I was actually thinking about getting that gorilla wrench but I thought what I got from sears would be enough. I got one of those things that you move like a bike thing. Can't really put any leverage on it like on a wrench but I didn't think getting the lugs off would be this hard.

Try to find a long steel pipe or something and use that for more leverage.

76 ft/lbs torque in the manual.

That's for the 17's only, I think. The steelies should be a little less.

uhhh...
i hope you're not using a torque wrench to take off the lugnuts...

they're used more for putting stuff on and tightening them to a specific specification..

if anything.. use your stock one in the trunk with a breaker bar... nothing beyond that. i usually use the one in the trunk and use my leg to kick it down to loosen it.

Laugh all you want but i do the same thing and it works!!

Just position the stock one parallel to the ground and stand on it with all your body weight. I don't know how much you weigh but i'm sure its more than the 60-70lbs needed to loosen those things.

I guess its a little ghetto, but it works

yup, i torque the lugs off to a good 180lbs haha... if they dont come off by me pushing them, i will step on the bar.. i kno i kno, not a good idea, but it works, and i dont take my wheels off that often.

you probably have the torque setting on the wrench set too low to take off the lugs....

like everyone else said....use the wrench in the trunk

YOU SHOULD NEVER USE A TORQUE WRENCH TO EVER TAKE A LUG NUT OFF!!! The torque wrench is only there to TIGHTEN the nut, NOT REMOVE IT. You will damage your friend's torque wrench if you're using it this way!

Also.. Use a breaker bar, or that gorilla wrench, if that doesn't work, then it's obvious some moron used an air wrench on your lug nuts! Have to go to a shop and use an air wrench to take them off.

You remember to break the lugnuts loose before putting the car in the air right? And yea like everyone has said torque wrenches are for tightening things only. Harborfreight sells cheap ones I think they are $20 when they go on sale.

^^ thought i saw it for $10 at harbor frieght, but who knows how reliable it is. Anyone ever test one of those out?

Craftsman has been okay lately. But I heard that craftsman's quality on the torque wrenches have been hit or miss. Anyone else hear this? The ones I've been using are fine, but they're a couple years old.
