How did he contradict himself? He basically said, keep it simple OR go ***** to wall crazy. IF he said 'keep it simple by going ***** to the wall crazy', THEN he would have contradicted himself. He gave two options by saying "if not".

He wasn't telling the guy to listen to listen to him. All he said was keep it simple or go big. The screw everyone else was obviously directed at the people who would hate on something different.

If he said 'listen to my advice, but don't listen to anyone but yourself', then yes, it would be a contradiction. He didn't say that though. He gave advice, and told him to ignore everyones opinion on the outcome, not the influence on the purchase.
