Spacers push the wheels out. mainly for big breaks. cosmetically the make the wheels look wider by tucking them right under the fender. the may help handling a little. depends how wide you get. you have to be careful not to go to wide though. These work good if you are doing a wide body kit and don't have the money for custom wheels/offset. ebay has smaller ones. wheeladapter.com are wider ones. you could actually change the bolt pattern with them as well. which isn't really necessary because the scion has a common pattern. Go with hub centric as well.

So, what would be the farthest one could go out with the stock wheels, and to have better handling car?

well you would have to see how much space you have between the outside of the tire and the inside of the fender. Keep it just inside that so the tire wont rub if you are lowered or hit a big bump.

I'm curious as to how wide of a spacer one could run without needing to install new studs. Anyone?

5mm. max. I wouldnt even do that to tel you the truth. I like having the peace of mind that the studs are providing all the threads that they can.

yeah, you dont want to mess with that. if you go wide, get the ones with the studs in them.
