I am actually waiting for the paint to dry on mine right now. i used VHT nightshades with a adhesion promoter base. i did this on my 05 and used about 4-5 coats of clear then sanded and buffed it till it was cleaner than my paint. if anyone is interested, ive been taking pictures along the way from removal to finish coats.
if your honestly looking for a professional tinted tail light look i would go with vinyl overlay. I just bought a 15" x 10 yard roll today for my car. Im also going to be tinting a couple of my friends cars tail lights with it. Its a dark grey overlay. You can buy pre cut ones for 15 bucks on ebay. Vinyl is vinyl if you do your research you can find out certian brands that sell the right color to your specs. Many people use the spray but i feel thats a waste of money and time. your better off with the overlays considering they last 5 years and they have a nicer finish along with being more protectant. I would advise you have someone who knows how to do them but their gonna charge you anywhere from 50 to 100 to do them.
since when is vinyl more protectant then paint and clear coat?? vinyl overlays are cheap and a PIA to get on right. and good luck tinting a 2011 tail light, the lens has alot of curves and a sharp flat spot on the top, can almost guarantee regular tint wont work or look right on that. should work good for the 05-10 lens though.

if you say so.... ill tell you what, if you can get vinyl to look better than my painted lights, i will strip them and have an educated person put vinyl on them. post some pics if you do a 2011 tc (if you're not doin a tc2, then post somewhere else). "the reason its harder is because it takes skill"?? i was refering more to the 2011 light, not in general. if you can paint and clear without skill or knowledge, then you're a special case. the 05-10 light is a light curve with no ridges, the only gap is a small one around the reverse light (05-06). there are several bends and bevels on the new one including a ~1/8'' step where the red lens meets the clear marker, so basically, for the 2011 application, until i see vinyl that looks good on it, i think paint is the way to go.

Used VHT Nite Shades. I took my time and they turned out great.
