Default Bolt-ons and MPG

Hey everybody,

So ever since I got my car in May 2012…I've been driving the same roads, same routes no change in style of driving except for the occasional days where I have a little fun and floor it.

With no bolt-ons: ~24-25 avg mpg.
With Tsudo: ~23-24 avg mpg.
With Tsudo + Injen CAI/SRI: ~22-23 avg mpg.
With Tsudo+Injen+Dezod Green Header: ~20 avg mpg.

With all 3 bolt-ons, I was expecting some increase in mpg, which is what a lot of others have been saying.
But to my surprise, with the addition of the green header, my mpg dropped down 4 mpg.

Not only did my avg mpg. meter drop, but my fuel meter is also dropping a lot faster…and this is going to hurt my wallet in the long run.

1/4 of a tank can normally 60-75 miles (24 mpg) which is about right.
But now I'm only getting 50-60 miles from 1/4 tank (20 mpg).

I've asked around and people have said:
- Bigger pipes = more air intake = ecu uses more fuel to compensate
- Disconnect battery and see how that goes

I'd like to get some more feedback and see if there is anyway I can fix this.
I'd like to keep all my parts but if there is no way my mpg can recover, I plan to uninstall the header and intake, and sell it off.

are you sure you aren't just driving faster since you installed all of those parts? i'd imagine you'd want to experience the added power so you'd be pushing the car past 2,500 rpms more than before.

I'd be interested too. i always imagined these bolt ons would help mpg, not hurt it.

I do remember having my battery disconnected during the install…but I don't remember if I reset it again after I did my tests right after installing it.

I'll definitely try resetting it and double checking all my pipes…

I don't push it past 2,500 often enough for it to drop down ~4 mpg. I consider my self a very conservative driver and accelerate slower than other drivers on the road.

I drive an auto, so when I drive, I drive in order to get my eco light on…the only time the light is NOT on, is when I'm accelerating from 0-35.

I was going to go with Newman's theory, but you sound like you drive like me. I drive an auto as well and I usually try my best to keep the ECO light on.

I have a Takeda Intake, Dezod Green, and TRD axle and mine hovers around 29.5. Your case is really interesting.

Very strange indeed.
Our only differences are my tsudo and your axle back, I'm sure there is a play in mileage there….but there is not way it can be a 9 mpg difference.

The only time I mash on my accelerator is when i get onto the on-ramp to the highway…which only happens 2-3 times a week.

What I haven't trie yet is to disconnect the battery for 10+ minutes..so that will be my first experiment

let us know if it changes anything.
I might as well just upgrade my exhaust and nothing else if that's what's going to happen to my mpg =/ I am at roughly 27-29mpg right now, manual car, stock.

You are getting what I expect from a manual tC from what I've been hearing.

I initially only planned to have my tsudo exhaust for the exhaust note and had no intentions in going for bolt-on power...at least not until I found a sweet deal for the header/intake/exhaust

I will keep you all posted. I recently moved onto campus this year so I only my weekend commutes to and fro school/home

Yeah I know what you mean - i wasn't going to mod mine at all for bolt-ons but found an amazing deal for the TRD exhaust so i had to buy it. I am surprised you found a good deal for the Dezod header. how much did that run you, and was it used?

Do you mind if I ask who you got your TRD exhaust from?

I got the dezod header + agency power crank pulley for $450 total.
Both used, so I guess you could say the header was $350 and $100 for the pulley.

I haven't had the time to install my pulley yet.

I got the TRD from a member on here who was selling it used but I couldn't refuse the price. It was $276 shipped to my door. I think it's an amazing price considering its now looks brand new since i cleaned it up a lot and that retail the thing goes for $550+ w/o shipping charges.

That is a great price for the header, I wish i could find something like that

Would you be interested if I sold the parts at a price close to what I got it for?

OR would you rather play it safe and not get into the situation I'm in?

At this point idk if I would want more than my exhaust. i don't have a lot of money to buy more mods and was thinking of doing shifter mods instead of engine mods (shift **** and quickshifter).

I am confident that someone would jump right on the Dezod green header if you sold that for even $350-$400.

Good parts you have on the car. I am about to put on Dezod's green header. Regarding your mileage....you change your oil regularly? Have you cleaned your MAF sensor recently? What is your tire pressure? This can have a huge impact on MPGs.

Thanks for love!

I just changed the oil at 10k…I'm at 13.7k miles right now..
I recently installed the Injen intake around 13.5k and the MAF seemed fine.

But you bringing up the tire pressure is a good point…when I swapped to my new set of tires/wheels…i did not transfer over my tpms sensors….and one day my pops took the tC for a drive and noticed the TPMS light…not knowing…he added more air pressure to ~38 psi is what he told me.

But as of now, I haven't tried to do anything yet. But my first stop is to reset the battery/ecu and see how that goes…and then wait this out until May when they change out of the winter fuel mix.

But if I'm impatient…I may try going for the unichip or just parting out my header and intake.

60mph = achieved 37mpg

oiled changed less than 100 beforehand.
