Default Engine Cover?

New owner of 2012 tC.

Was there a plastic cover over the cylinder head?

No, it's the same motor out of the 2012 Camry which does come with an engine cover. If you go to your dealer, they would be happy to sell you one for around $100 ish. Our car, unlike the 1st gen, does not come with an engine cover from the factory. There are other solutions though: Some people have painted their engines and others have opted for the JDM style carbon fiber covers that you can find online.

What he said. I ended up getting my cover from a salvage 2010 Camry.

Besides the obvious cosmetic purpose of some of the nicer engine covers, does this part actually help or aid in any other aspect? Any other functions besides looking pretty?

The reason I ask I cuz I have a vented hood on my tC2 and water occasionally gets in there at the car wash. I know a little bit of water inside my engine bay isn't gonna kill my engine.
But in in the long run, I'm wondering if an engine cover would better protect and repel those specks of water from my engine?

Any thoughts?

If you're worried about water getting inside your engine, don't. If I remember correctly, and guys please correct me if I'm wrong, but the actual engine block is made from aluminum alloy which should not be susceptible to rusting. The engine won't be hurt at all over the course of life with water droplets from a carwash that immediately evaporate away.

As always though, if it makes you feel better having the engine cover, get it. I plan on it just because it looks awesome.

^ Correct

An engive cover such as the Camry engine cover or Descendant CF engine cover has 3 functions:

1. Look Pretty.... (Duh)

2. Keeps engine heat down SLIGHTLY by absorbing some heat and controlling the dispersion of heat from the block

3. Suppressed the noise of lifters.

If you have a vented hood and listen really closely when you drive, you can hear the lifters going as if your hood were open and at idle. Used to bother the heck out of me, but I've gotten used to it

cool, thanks for the input guys! so since a little water from the car wash isn't a big deal inside the engine bay, what would you guys say about driving it during the rain or prolonged exposure? Always worries the hell out of me, so I've never once driven my car in the rain for fear of engine failure.

no worries....I was sketchy on the rain issue too and then Ted pointed out in a diff. thread that if you can powerwash an engine bay, why worry about rain. After I read that I took my car to a carwash and powerwashed over the hood to get over my fear.

I used the Ceramic brake caliper paint and baked it in the oven @ 250 degrees for an hour. You could use any heat resistant paint.

That's gorgeous. I'd take that over a plastic/CF engine cover any day.

Thanks man. When I have some free time I'm going to make a cover to hide the plugs and clutter.

Exactly. Baking Plasti Dip might work!

Has anyone tried on the Camry cover yet ? ( I have a 2011 Camry engine cover ) know it will fit our cars but I have the TRD Strut bar & I would
have to remove it in order to put on the cover. It looks tight under the bar & don't want to go through the hassle of removing it if it won't fit ... Help !!
