Default whining noise while driving at 40 mph

while driving if i get the car to 40 mph and i let the gas go i hear a whining noise, if i go over 45 or under 40 the noise goes away, cant really tell if its coming from wheel area or under the hood (to me seems coming under the hood), any ideas what this could be?

an automatic is going to dump you into 5th when cruising even at 35mph. come on....

and since you think you that you cruise at 45mph in 2nd, just go to toyota and have them look at it. don't strain yourself

same thing happens for me... usually when im cruising, at any speed faster than 45mph

it seems to be coming more from my sunroof though.

*edit* driving a first-gen... didn't realize this was in the 2nd gen posts... saw this post browsing the new threads..

I have the same issue. It wasn't there when I first bought the car. It starts at about 40mph and goes all the way up to whatever speed I accelerate to. It's even worse when the A/C is on. I'm thinking maybe when I installed the S/S I didn't properly reconnect the filter box or something and its escaping air. I have a manual and it doesn't matter the gear. Anyone else having this issue?

For all you guys with this whining sound, do any of you have subs, upgraded speakers, and/or amps to go with them?

idk ive noticed that same type of noise too but it all depends on type of road, cornering, fresh pavement seems to make it most noticable, also driving next to the wall on the highway. but i think it happens at all speeds it might just be most noticed with th tone of your car at those speeds. it has bothered me since i bought my car and noticed it for the first time. along with clutch chatter but its the first stick ive owned and it seems normal, and anyone i ask says its fine even the stealership but thats a given. i could go off on a list of things about the dealership especially with my ipod hook up but this isnt the section for it. anyway i wouldnt worry about the noise much, it only gets worse the more you think about it, trust me

Agreed with above. It's not tire noise that sounds different plus you can hear much more clearly with the Windows closes vs open. Again its only when your on the throttle once your off it goes away. It's not a nice sounds either. S/S=short shifter : ) oh yea my ipod hookup plus steering wheel controls didn't work when I took delivery.

Do you guys think it is more of a taping noise? I have this same issue, but to me, it sounds more like putting a pencil in a fan. A fan with plastic blades. I have ruled out that it is the A/C because the noise happens with the A/C on or off, and continues untill I speed up or slow down. With my car, this noise happens every single time I start my car after it has set for a while (3hrs+) and when I get to 40mph. But, it only happens once. If I go over 40mph, it stops, and if I go back down to 40, it will not happen again, just that first time.

Are you perhaps around ~2000 RPMs?
