Default 2014 Observations/Questions from a Potential Buyer

Test drove a 2014 10th Anny and looked at several other trim levels. Some observations/questions I'd appreciate opinions on as I continue to shop. Thanks Matt

1. Are the seats comfortable enough on long trips? I need to drive a a lot of highway miles for my job.
2. What kind of mileage can I expect on the highway? Even in 6th gear at 75-80 mph I was pushing 3k rpms which seemed high to me.
3. Does it have daytime running lights? Didn't seem to on the demo.
4. What does the radio do other than music? Trip/mpg computer? Bluetooth?
5. Is keyless standard? Can you get push button start?
6. I saw a bunch of 10th anny versions (5 between 2 lots). Are they not selling well?
7. Does anyone have the "Sport" package? Looked cool on the one care I saw.

1. Seat are quite comfortable I really like them.
2. I've been getting quite bad mileage, like I'm lucky to get 30mpg but I also find it hard to romp on it and do a good bit of city driving. You might be able to get 32mpg hwy but I wouldn't expect much better then that.
3. Mine has DRLs but its Canadian so it has to.
4. My radio has bluetooth music and calls but that's it, its also the upgraded HU so I'm not sure if its standard. Theres a trip mpg and thermometer in the odometer.
5. The cars don't come with keyless or push button start expect for special anniversary ones. They are all typical remote unlock.
6. The tC in general isn't selling very well not sure on figures though.
7. The sport package is basically a collection of the available TRD accessories for the car and a nice looking bodykit. I have the TRD springs on mine and love them, the exhaust sounds really awesome too, I want one but can't afford it. If you're going to want the TRD stuff anyway it would be worth getting the whole package all at once.

Thanks Scorch - looks like I can get the base model for $18,200 down in NC. I may pull the trigger at the price soon but trying to decide on color. I like the Blue and Red the best. Matt

1. Are the seats comfortable enough on long trips? I need to drive a a lot of highway miles for my job.
im 6'3" 130 lbs so for me this could be bias, to me they are great but long enough car rides my butt with start to hurt a little, i have heated seats now and helps a lot haha, my back is never bothered by them

2. What kind of mileage can I expect on the highway? Even in 6th gear at 75-80 mph I was pushing 3k rpms which seemed high to me.
i do mainly city driving and im heavy footed on the pedal so im usualy around 25mpg

3. Does it have daytime running lights? Didn't seem to on the demo.
they have parking lights but not daytime running lights.

4. What does the radio do other than music? Trip/mpg computer? Bluetooth?
bluetooth talk, audio, has your contacts, can be navi, audio works with music if you use your phone navi.

5. Is keyless standard? Can you get push button start?
push to start is only on the monogram series as of now, the 10th ones have keyless entry i believe. i need to push the button on my keys to get in

6. I saw a bunch of 10th anny versions (5 between 2 lots). Are they not selling well?
they cost more and only in one color, plus just too many lights for me, emblems glow, shifter glows, dash has a glow

7. Does anyone have the "Sport" package? Looked cool on the one care I saw.
what is this sports package? if you mean TRD that i wouldnt know, the exhaust would be nice, the strut bar too. intake is overpriced, springs werent the drop i wanted, but im picky haha

Also a 14 owner have to agree on seats being pretty comfortable, I'm about 6'2 180 and have a decently wide back from weight lifting, could see anyone being much bigger having problems because I really don't have much more room to go to be too big for them, rest of the questions answers will be the same, and as pointed out there are a lot of ten series still due to most people not thinking the few lights and etc are worth a few grand more.

on the 10 series i think will be harder to sell with the monogram ones out that come with:
push to start
rear window wiper
heated seats
low profile wing
keyless entry
foglights (i think)

1: The seats I find are not overly comfy on long journeys personally, but im 5'10 130lbs. My previously car had very comfy cloth seats, might just need breaking in, I don't know. Only have 5000km on it.

2: I get about 6.5/7 L/100km on flat highway at ~90KM/h, converts to 33-36mpg highway. Much less than that in the city, I get 12L/100km (about 19mpg city only).

3: Another Canadian tC here, DTRL mandatory by law.

4: The Radio on the 2014 has CD (I think MP3 CD is supported) USB/Iphone support (most androids do not work via usb, Bluetooth only), Bluetooth audio and phone, also stores contacts. keep in mind you can not use the dial feature while driving. Oh, also voice dialing, but it is a pain in the ___ to use... Also if you pay extra you can get the navigation package, but for the price you can get a really nice navi deck from someplace else.

5: My tC came with keyless entry as standard, might be Canada, not sure.

6: Not sure Canada only got 125 of them.

7: All I got from Scion was the short shifter and the low profile spoiler, everything else is overpriced from the dealer. I'll do the other mods myself.

I would have gotten fogs installed from the dealer if they were out at the point.

All things considered though, I love my car and plan to keep it for quite some time.

Thanks Red - great mph on the highway - I hope I get that. Wonder what speed you cruise at? I put down a deposit on a blue streak base recently and the dealer is trying to track one down. Red would be my second choice. Matt

Highway mileage is nice but if you drive around town then it sucks haha. I think the fogs got cheaper? I looked at trdsparks and they are 240. Could of swore they were more when they came out.

Has anybody installed the fogs on a 2014? I saw the DIY from 2013 but all the pics seemed to be gone. I have done it before on a Honda but had the factory instructions. Anybody got those? Thanks

Their kit is all plug and play I believe so you shouldn't have an issue installing them. If I get my hands on spare money one of these days I'll be getting them

Thanks Scorch...exactly what I was looking for! And even better it doesn't look like you have to take off the bumper cover like I did with my Honda Pilot. This one should be easy. Now who's got the best price on the fog light kit? Matt

A couple more questions after talking to some more salesmen:
1. They tell me the recommended oil change interval is now 10k miles...is that what you guys are doing now? Even with full synthetic that seems long.
2. Many dealerships now offer lifetime power train warranties to the original owner. They said I obviously have to document all service according to manufacturers guidelines so I can't do any work myself because there is insufficient documentation. Thoughts?
3. Lastly I'm in search of a blue base model and they are fairly hard to track down so I have asked 2 different dealerships about ordering one. One told me 6 weeks and the other 6 months. Anyone have any inside info on a lead time from factory?

Thanks
Matt

Yeah I talked to the service area about the oil they use(at least at my dealership where a friend of a friend works at) they said that is normal now for their cars to be 10k a change but said to watch the levels still to make sure it doesn't get low. Also they use Mobil full synthetic.

For number two I have no input on that one, I'll leave it for the more knowledgable people.

I see that being lame lol, there are two blue ones at my dealership right now. One inside on display and the other outside.

Seat are quite comfortable I really like them, only thing better is the FRS ones
2. What kind of mileage can I expect on the highway? Even in 6th gear at 75-80 mph I was pushing 3k rpms which seemed high to me.
ive been avg about 28.8-29. both city and highway driving. also running a slightly heavier wheel/tire
3. Does it have daytime running lights? Didn't seem to on the demo.
None that come on when you start the car in the states. but you can turn on the lights with one click to get the side LEDs and the headlight LEDs on.
4. What does the radio do other than music? Trip/mpg computer? Bluetooth?
Has CD, USB, AUX, Bluetooth (calling/music) voice commands can be done. Temp, avg mpg, trip A&B all on the Odometer
5. Is keyless standard? Can you get push button start?
All 2nd gen TCs should have keyless entry. Push to start only on Monogram and RS7.0 seres TC
6. I saw a bunch of 10th anny versions (5 between 2 lots). Are they not selling well?
I own a 10 series tc. they have been selling slowly i guess do to the lights and only one color. but honest this silver is better then regualer cause its blue hint to it.. the emblems well ive had people ask me about getting them for them also had people walk by and be like oh look at that. (also they are only on for like 30secs or when the doors are open. the dash has a switch to shut it off and the shift **** is only on when you want it (button too)
7. Does anyone have the "Sport" package? Looked cool on the one care I saw.
there is no "sport package" everything sport wise is added on to the car or you can buy all the stuff cheaper and do it yourself for much less then having a dealer do it. some dealers in the "south" have badged TCs with a "sport" badge but they just added on some parts to it and changed more.

1. They tell me the recommended oil change interval is now 10k miles...is that what you guys are doing now? Even with full synthetic that seems long.
yea that oil has gotten pretty advance now, put toyota oil isnt a full synthetic, when i swap over to RP oil i change it ever 6k
2. Many dealerships now offer lifetime power train warranties to the original owner. They said I obviously have to document all service according to manufacturers guidelines so I can't do any work myself because there is insufficient documentation. Thoughts?
ive not heard of the lifetime power train warranties but each dealership is different. i know when it comes to doing all that its almost pretty point less cause nothing will go wrong with the car while its in warrenty so its just good to save the money they charge you, IMO

3. Lastly I'm in search of a blue base model and they are fairly hard to track down so I have asked 2 different dealerships about ordering one. One told me 6 weeks and the other 6 months. Anyone have any inside info on a lead time from factory?
this im not sure on.. and i havent seen any blue ones here in the LA area. yea. or at least modded ones. i saw one right when the 14s came out.

Word from the dealers now is that the tC is made in Japan and they can't order cars for me. Every 2 weeks they find out what is coming to their region and they can let me know. They also can only trade cars within their region and there are none in the southeast that meet my specs! Guess I will have to wait and see what they get.

Also pricing varies drastically even though they advertise "pure pricing". What a joke...each dealer appears to have his own "pure pricing". I can save 2 grand shopping around even though each dealer will tell you they are required to sell at the same price across the entire region.

I dislike the noise level and i hope better quality tires like w/e brand tires the luxury makes use on their sedans will help somewhat.
You can spend money to dynamat the car/lay down some other stuff on the floor and panels to block some noise, but plenty of noise comes in because of the glass roof.

I don't mind it too much on my car. mines is 2012 but the majority of the body is the same as the 2014 model.
