Default 16" Alloys for snow?

I want dedicated wheels/tires for winter snow usage. I like to go as skinny and high profile as possible for this purpose. My 2014 Tc is bone stock, with factory suspension, brakes, wheels, etc. I don't plan on getting big brakes or anything.
The tire places don't recommend anything smaller than 17" wheels, but I'd really like to go 16" and it looks to me like that wouldn't be a problem for caliper clearance. I measure around 1.5" clearance (inside of rim to caliper) now with my factory 18" wheels on the front. So it seems like I'd still have 1/2" with 16" wheels. The wheels I'm thinking of using are the NS1503 in a 16x7 +38. Any experience or thoughts on this? I have to order these, so it's not like I can test fit before buying.

I drove around Alaska in feet of snow with the stock 18 inch wheels and good snow tires, (studless)

is there a reason other than, just wanting? like are you stuck or something?
