Default Wheel and tire question

Hey guys I'm new here. I currently have a 2011 Scion TC and was thinking about getting new wheels. I'm thinking of getting 18x8.5 wheels and 245/40 tires. I called the tire shop and some guy told me 245's won't fit and will rub a lot. Does anyone know if that's true?

They wont run even if you have Eibach sportline springs. Just remember that at some point you will either have something heavy in your hatch or 3 people sitting in the back seat and that will cause the tire to rub.

those wont rub at all.. maybe like said above (if you have people in the back) but i would go with 245/35 tire.. (my current set up is 19x8 245/35 and i have zero rub.)

So the guy at the tire shop doesn't know what he's talking about? haha
I'm fairly new to modding and I'm stilling learning but why would a 245/40 rub and 225/45 won't?

I don't see why they would rub at all. The 245/40 should have a slightly (3mm) lower profile than the stock 225/45. Unless your running a really low offset wheel there is no reason why it would rub. I don't think I'd go with a 35 sidewall on an 18. Won't look right. That's over 15 mm smaller sidewall.

It's not going to rub anyways. 8.5 wheel is 1" wider than stock. 245 is only 2 cm or 20mm wider than stock. So the tire will be slightly more stretched than stock tire size on stock rim. I'd say it's perfect for that rim size. Just be careful what offset the wheel you purchase is. That is the only thing that could cause rub.

i like to always refer to my fav website http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp
you can compare what your tire is now (the left) to what you want next (the right)

you get pretty good mesurements.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm still learning haha.

This is my plan so far. 18x8.5 +38 on 245/40 all around. Will there be rubbing or would I have to roll the fender or anything?

Any specific tires you guys recommend?

i think you will be fine, no rubbing or needing fender roll. since your at stock hight right? TC2 bolt pattern is 5x114.3 TC1 is 5x100 i think i would get a 245/35 tire it wont look as bulky but im not sure what you want for look.

Ok thanks. Yeah it's stock height. The look I'm going for is more of the standard look not the "slammed" look.

Idk why the guy at the tire shop saying it will rub big time and told me to get 235's instead haha

out of curiousity. why are you getting a 245/40. i have a 18x9 rim on a 225/40. fits fine. rides fine and would be very safe from rubbing

Isn't that the point in getting a wider rim. Getting a wider tire. Not only do you get wider stance but you also get more tire on the ground with a 245. If you have a 225 on a wider wheel it's still the same amount of tread touching the road. So u only get the stance. Not the grip.

the tire guy might have said that to give u a "scary" reason to not get 245...cause on a 8.5 wide wheel, 235 is the common tire width for that wheel width and looks the best. 245 might get bulky (the wheel i'm selling is 8.5 width with a 235 tire if u want a reference)

tyrestretch.com is a good source to what a certain tire spec looks on a certain wheel spec

also 40 or 45 sidewall is best for an 18", 35 is more for a 19"

Oh ok. Do you have a picture of it so I can get an idea of what it looks like? Will 245 be too wide and give it that "slammed" look when I'm trying to keep the standard look?

the link i provided has oogles of pictures. and i said you can find pictures of a 8.5 wheels with 235 in my thread (personal or sale)

tire width has little to do with "slammed" look since "slamming" a car means going lower. the wider the wheel or tire could potentially rub the inner fender depending on how low it is, but there a billion other factors that could be done to adjust and avoid that
