Default 2006 Scion xA Lound Noise between 50-60 MPH like airplane

Hi Friends,

I have 2006 Scion xA with 48K miles on it and it makes a loud noise like airplane between 50 - 60 miles per hour. Can some body explain me what to look for? This noise comes from under the car. :?

Are thee possible heat shield problems?

Also I have a passenger side A/C vent blower fan making ticking noise all the time. Can somebody help to figure out this issue and possible clean it first.

Thanks a ton from Dallas,TX

Heat shields would make a high pitched tingy rattling sound and not a constant airplane typle hum or rumble. Something like that would be likely something that is rotating. Wheel/hub bearings? Wheel/tire out of balance? Warped rotors?

I have bought this xA recently and previous owner installed a new tires.

He gave me a receipt from Firestone where he installed these tires. It does say balance was done but no wheel alignment was done.

I might want to get that done. I will also check if wheel bearing are in good shape or not. Is there an easy way to find this out by visual inspection?

Thanks for your reply.

its the tires! my car did the exact same thing at really any speed past 30MPH, got new tires, problem resolved. im guessing though if it only makes the noise at 50-60MPH for you, your tires probably arent toooooooo bad, just a lil low.in which case i would recommend E-dead, the xA/B really need it!

Could be a warped tire.

Is it a droning noise that is coming from the outside?

Sorry I could not reply back was out of town for a while. I took my car to Stupid jerks at Irving/Las Colinas FireStone here in Dallas.

These idiots cannot thinks that is normal. (The tires are Firestone FR170 or FR197 I think.) They rotated tires for free for me. That seems to have reduced the noise. But it is preety sure it is a bad tire.

Well these guys went ahead and recommended me $400 worth of work to be including drive belts, oil change and what not.

surprisingly they think oil is dirty even if their own sticker and history says it was done 2000 miles before. they told me it is due past 2000 miles.

I need to find a real good mechanic here in Dallas. Any recommendations?

The Drivers Edge in Irving used to be good but some of the real good mechanics have left and the jerks on counter are idiots and want your money.

Beware of these guys!

Sorry didn't see this post till now.

I had a loud humming noise come from my right front tire after I rotated them at 30,000 miles. The noise would start at about 30mph. I didn't think it could be the tires because it didn't make the noise prior to rotating them. I took it in and the guy at the tire shop told me that it could be unevenly worn or a broken belt. Either way I had to replace the tire and they were due anyway. Put on the Goodyear Assurance Fuel max LRR tires and haven't looked back.

Sounds like you are correct in thinking you have a bad tire. Sometimes new tires are not quite right and will make more noise than others according to my mechanic. I'd get it replaced if possible because I don't like half-arsed parts on my car, especially if it could potentially be dangerous.

Thanks a lot. I will look for Goodyear tires. I have a oil change and tire rotation coming up at 50K miles. I will see if that makes any difference.
