Is buying a Scion xA with about 100,000 miles a good idea?
I just picked meself up a xA with 77k on the clock for 5400. Not too bad of a price considering the condition. Plus the old owner had a fasttrack sticker (freeway toll sticker) so most were freeway miles. It even came with some custom stars on the back window. I know, rare huh? lol
But If you could pick up a Toyota for cheap I would say go for it. Don't listen to the "gas pedal getting stuck" mess, 'yota makes the most reliable cars in the world.
PLUS, I've seen cars with 50k miles in FAR worst condition than cars with 200k miles. It's really up to the old owner.

Searching on Craigslist, I found this. Good idea?

Big budget maintenance? I bought a xB with 90k on it last fall, and the only things needing replacement were the power steering belt, washer fluid pump, and tie rod bushings. It was under $200 for everything. These motors do not fail early, about the only thing to keep an eye on is he water pump. If it starts making noise, get it replaced. Gotta love a timing chain, no timing belt replacement needed.
honestly, what kind of car are we talking about here? Pontiac? This is a Toyota people's! Toyota's motors are MONEY! I've had 2 Camry's that both went over 175k miles. Of course, I did my own maintenance and oil changes but if it's not raced or modified then it should have no troubles.

eh some of you guys are crazy... I sold my XB manual with about 127,000 miles.. it had original clutch in great shape, 1 set of brakes changed the second set was still good, original rotors were still in good shape. Th new owner has a much lower miles XB and mine ran and tracked better that his other one. Don't let miles scare you there are some high mile vehicles out there running very well still
BTW the owner of my old box has had no problems at all

It really depends on the history of the car. I think you should find that out first before making any decisions regardless of 20k or 100k miles. Someone could treat the car like crap for 15k and it wouldn't be as good as a car with 50k that has had good care put into it.
My most recent purchase was a WRX that had 50k with only one owner and she was an old lady. She never took it past 4000 RPM...but she did take it for every single scheduled maintenance. It's been going strong and I gave it an appropriate break in.

I recently bought a 2006 Scion xA with 47K miles on it for 8500 in Dallas area. Car is well kept and no issues in driving. New tires and fully serviced single owner.
Now tell me if that was good deal or a dud?

sounds like a reasonable deal, but im look into gettin into a new set of wheels right now, mainly the tc,xd, and eclipse gt/gts(05' and up). and there all going for the same price and miles as your xA, but with obvious perks in comparison. as far as xA's go though it seems to bout an average price for that year and miles.
to reiterate, so long as the car has a good/excellent reciept history (mainly oil changes done every 3-5K miles) , then you should be good to go even at 100K miles. If you have an eye for detail, and can spot some wear spots on the interior/exterior.. bring them up to the seller and see what he/she has to say about the condition marks (coming down in price, etc).
There are a million other cars under $8K that are far worse purchases. I was on autotrader.com a couple of weeks ago.. checking on 2000-05 Toy. Echos (same engine/tranny as our car)... and people want $6-8K for high milage rigs! The xA is lighter... and possibly more aerodynamic.

I have an RS 2.0, which is an '05. Bought it in 2009 for $10k, with 25k miles on the car (the guy worked literally 4 miles from his house). It was a rip, I could have gotten it cheaper, but it was exactly what i wanted, close by, and not over-budget.
I vote, if it's what you want, and you're really sure, get it before someone else does.
