Default Locking noise after you turn on the ignition...

In my xA, whenever I turn on the ignition and start driving off, seconds later, I hear a small click noise as if something is locking. I'm trying to figure out what this sound is. Are our xAs suppose to lock automatically??? If so, my locks don't but hear a lock/clicky noise... Anyone have a clue what i'm talking about??? :?

Well, mine locks when I turn the key to "ON." Is yours an 06? It could be that it's different, and the power lock isn't strong enough. But I could be way off.

Yeah, I hear a click too. It's not very loud. It doesn't happen until the car starts rolling. I haven't figured out what it is yet. Sounds like in the dash area.

It does it on the xb as well, I wondered for a while but my best guess is that they are using a controler (that probably does several things) that is out of a different car that locked the doors when the car hits about 5 mph and the sund is a relay sending a pulse out. I guess to save money on scions they didn't install the rest of the locking system but they still left that relay in that circuit board.

That is just a guess but it setisfies me enough that it doesn't bother me anymore.

Mine is an 06, whats yours? So your locks actually automatically lock when you turn it to "ON"? Is your car stock or does it have an alarm system installed? When I hear the noise, I mostly hear it somewhere towards the back if im not mistaken. The sound doesn't annoy me, i'd just like to know what it is. And if it is suppose to lock automatically, I want it fixed. Next time I go to the dealer I may ask or I may just bring it in for them to check out.

Do you all have auto transmissions? Most auto trannies will click after putting it in Drive. It's the Reverse lockout so you can't put it in reverse without coming to a stop.

If not, it's probably a relay behind the dash.

I guess I get two clicks. When I turn the car on, the doors lock (I have the factory alarm, but I don't know if this makes a difference). I can idle for a while and there's no other noise. As soon as I start rolling there's another much softer click.

The relay sounds like a good guess. Don't know what for, though.

Hmm...I wonder if the Scion Security enables it to automatically lock the car once it is turned on because I don't have a factory alarm and my locks do NOT lock automatically. Anyone know if the car locks are suppose to lock automatically regardless if you have an alarm installed??

Well, there is a lead from the 'combination meter' (speedometer) CPU to the door lock controller, but there is NO explanation what that lead should be doing, if anything...

Still digging to see if I can find any explanation in the schematics.

(Got me curious on this, now.)

That lead from the speedometer is probably for the auto-door lock that works with the optional security system.

But that lead ALSO appears, and is connected, in the xB, which doesn't lock that way - with or without the Scion Security.

The OEM Scion Security door locks are not speed activated. They are ignition activated (key turned to on/off). Hmmmm. . . . .

The dealer I bought my xA from didn't have the alarm in stock when I bought my car, so I drove it for a couple of weeks without it. It was just installed yesterday, and I can tell you without a doubt, the security system locks the door when you turn the ignition (default behavior). Without it, the doors didn't lock automatically.

I think you guys may be hearing the ABS servo pump self check. It happens at about 1-2 mph. It sounds like a faint clicking or grunting sound for about a second or two.

Nearly all Toyotas do this.

this sounds like it could be it because I do hear mine as soon as I start rolling.

BTW Thomas, when looking at the schematics you may want to also check the one for the door lock control relay I remember from the research you helped me with when I fried mine that that relay contains some functions of the scion security even on vehicles without security installed.

Yup. As we found out back then, the "Door Lock Control Relay" is one Hell of a lot more complex than it's name indicates, and ties into just about every major system in the vehicle. I'd love to be able to read a detailed explanation of what it does - that's a pretty good sized CPU in there.

That was one of the schematics I was checking - and noticing it gets the same signal from the ECU that the Speedo does for displaying speed. I still have zero idea of why the DLCR needs to know how fast I am going, or what it expects to do with that data.
