Default mpg figures

even though my car is back to 99.9% stock once again i still get 40mpg.... aftermarket intake, exhaust header lowering springs, and a few other mods didn't really make any difference what so ever... but the only good thing i did add to my car is cruise control set it 65 mph and 40mpg was easy and i didn't have to follow any semi trucks what so ever... and that it was like a perfect day for driving

the only thing that isn't stock is my welded in cat back system

after having all those aftermarket mods in for at least 30K miles and now i have 47K miles and all the parts are now off my car

i am impressed i get 32 city 40 highway thats f-in awesome!!!

and i'm still going to be getting a new car that will get crappier gas mileage in about 5 months from now

Interesting.... I never broke 38mpg til I lowered it. The roof rack and or front window vent visiors drop it 2mpg.

I got 42mpg on my way to Southern virginia (Southern Roanoke Area) today from D.C. it was pourring rain the entire trip, i have a cold air intake (i was paranoid about hydrolocking lol) and I had about a 5-10mph head/crosswind. Amazingly enough at an average speed of 70mph I got 42mpg. once you hit 70mph you are at 3500rpm and apparently that is when the intake cam changes timing with the VVTI.

I was amazed i got this mileage with my CAI (K&N typhoon with water repellent sock) considering I was at WOT many times during the trip because the hills are rediculous on Interstate 81. up and down and UP and down and UP and DOWN lol you get my drift.

the best tank ever, i got 46mpg with a 10mph tail/crosswind going 65-70mph with my CAI and Shell 87 Octane with the new nitrogen based cleaners. That was 90% highway going 275miles.

i love SUMMER GAS it always brings a smile on my face. While it tends to go up in price (5 or 10 cents) it also tends to up your MPG significantly in the city as well as teh highway.

i measure my MPG by filling up, resetting odo, and filling back up dividing number of miles driven by amount of fuel used.

Sometimes i get really crappy mpg on the highway...like 27mpg on a mild day with adequate sunshine and 50% humidity.

i think these cars really have their good and bad days, as well as the drivers of course ;)

Amazing dieselfuel202. I know my xa needed extra gas to drive through the rain, I shyed away from 80mph as it was like 4 grand. I always thought that engine ran fast for highway speeds, but it got great fuel economy.

Matt those are good figures considering the size of your rims and most likely stickier tires.

Yes cobb, I have no clue as to how I get these figures. Sometimes my car does what i want it to do, sometimes it kinda just wonders off in bad-mpg land.

What i really think is the key to this engine doing so well on the highway is that it runs near MAX torque and there is plenty of HP to make it kind of half sit on the transmission. you can feel when the gears bite vs. glide/about to engine break. if you can keep the car inbetween biting the gears and engine breaking you can acheive my numbers.

i dont know how some of you get 50+ MPG. it just baffles my mind lol. You must really know the clutch well, to shift without loosing momentum, bogging, and not pushing the pedal to hard.

Thanks. Best I got was 46mpg. Hey diesel, you need to hook up with pesudofrog, he lives in tysons corner and was always talking about his fuel economy.

I'm hitting right at 3000rpm when I go 70. (Auto vs stick?)

I would go 70-75mph straight highway to work for 50 miles (100 miles round trip) every day and my tanks would be 40-42mpg consistently. This is with a drop, 17" rims, and K&N CAI. I'd just keep it as steady as I could and not do any crazy maneuvers.

I've driven the car to San Jose on occasion and am at WOT for most of the paths through the mountains and still get a good 38mpg. Drove it to LA and even with the horrible traffic and constant idling when I filled up got 35mpg.

I keep records of all my trips and put it all into a spreadsheet for statistics. Now I'm actually needing to, since I'll need to keep track of all my work-related mileage.

I let my dad borrow the car for a week and he drove it down to Tehachapi and survived the whole week on a single tank of gas... he was squeezing 46mpg out of this thing. I don't know how he did it.

I noticed better MPG after going from my K&N CAI to my stock airbox for a while....like, significantly better...about 3-4MPG worth.
And then out of nowhere it stopped.

I have the K&N CAI back in and the MPG figures are the same as they've always been (which is still really good).

Keep in mind other things like the weather, humidity, etc effect fuel economy as well.

Ive read the oiled filters can cause a car not to perform right or throw a cel, but never had that problem with my tacoma. I never upgraded the filter in my xa, I thought it was freeer flowing enough as is.

Xetronic you should get a lighter flywheel and some pulley's. I assume you already have a CAI or SRI wich is great for fuel econ if used right.

Lighter rims will help as well as lighter tires. Synthetic Gear oil (Royal Purple, Redline, BG, Motrul), and better engines mounts. The effect of lightening all these parts is the equivalent (if not real close) to taking your audio setup out of the car. Lowering springs will help and well as a beatrush underpanel. Anything to make the car more efficient in any aspect will help with MPG.

I know thats a huge list but it is the best way to get good MPG's. I will eventually do all these things myself.

Top Tier Gas (chevron, shell (really good), BP (really good), and Exxon) im not a huge fan of exxon but Shell and BP are my favorite. Maybe its because im European living in the states but this petrol makes our cars run much more efficiently and much better performance.

I found that mixing sunoco and Chevron (1/2 sunoco, 1/2 chevron) gives on par results compared to Shell and BP. Good power, clean sounding engine, and great efficiency.

You can even drive fast more efficiently. While slowing down double clutch into a lower gear and ride it (zero fuel consumption). While you accelerate sometimes taking pressure off the accelerator pedal makes the car run richer, gives you more power, but needing less fuel than running leaner (almost oxymoronic).

BG44k every 10k miles is a great way to keep the heads and intake valves clean. This will in effect clean the car on both the exhaust producing/eliminating side, and intake side of the head in conjunction with Top Tier gas. Try and plan using the BG44k when doing long trips, or when you know you are going to mostly drive on the highway. The on ramps will help eliminate what the chemicals broke down in the lower rpm range, and highway driving breaks down sludge and carbon buildup with great efficiency.

This is what I do and my car has 53k miles on it and I bought it used. When I run the stock air intake with a purolator airfilter (OEM spec) and I drive on the highway is consistently get 39-41mpg like the Yaris's do. Maybe its the way I learned to feel the engine running more smoothly/efficiently with my feet and hands but try feeling the car out more. Somedays my car feels faster than other days, so i will drive it slow on slow days and fast on fast days.

Its like Japanese cars have soul now

Would an axle back increase MPG? maybe the new low resistance Michelin's at like 195 front, 185 rear? The 195 will stick better but the 185 prevents it from dragging as hard since the engine has a bigger foot print on the ground now.

I think a header, highflow cat, glasspack resonator, axle back exhaust setup would be the most efficient while containing some original piping to keep backpressure not to high, but not to low as well.

sorry for my run-on sentences, Im kind of in a hurry right now but I had alot on my mind haha.

in good regards,

Regis

How in the world do you guys get those averages?? The best I have gotten was 36~38mpg on the highway and I was drafting a huge truck. Other wise, driving like an old man I get about 29-30 mpg city.

Does a beatrush underpanel really improve mpgs?

The beat brush helps direct air flow so less use of the electric fan is needed.

I found the secret was shift points. I shifted at 3,500 rpms, engine brake as much as possible. I did not warm it up or cool it down. I combine trips and went to the furtherest destination first. In winter I did not turn on the heat til the blue light went off. I also lived in and worked in areas that had 15 or 25mph speed limits which allowed me to baby it til it warmed up til I hit the highway.

I took roads that had 45mph limits and did so in 4th gear. That is where the 40+ mpg came from. I got 52mpg one tank taking my dad to the hospital dfaily for treatment, 45 all the way.

Wow, talk about a hypermiler, lol. I'm going to start implementing your tips into my driving, I'll see in a few weeks if I'm successful. Thanks for the advice

The only bad thing about this car is that I get 19-22 mpg for extremly short trips (1mile-2miles) many times a day.

In the city I average 29mpg and I drive WOT often in the city.

Maybe because you live in florida. Very hot down there. Otherwise I have no clue as to how i actually acheive these numbers, usually happens when im not trying O_o

I think I know why. I do really short trips most of the time (1-2 miles) since all I need my car for is to get to school, which is very close to where I live. I don't often drive more then 20 miles in one day (generally I average less than 10 miles a day). So could that explain it? I've noticed that the longer the trip, the better my mpg.
