Default Night light

I've never really driven at night. So do I use the low beam or the high beam light (this goes for early dawn when it's still a little dark)?

If there's any traffic in front of you, whether it's oncoming or in the same direction as you, use the low beam. Otherwise use whichever lets you see better.

It is said, right before dawn, it is best to use your low beams...at least that was what they said in driver's ed......30 years ago.

Maybe it's a joke, but not everybody learns to drive right at 16. I didn't get my license until I was 21 mainly because I had lived in Tokyo where it's actually convenient to take public transit. I think it's pretty common with people who live in "real" cities -- no offense St Louis, Pittsburgh, etc... ;)

That said, proper headlight use seems like something you should've learned before getting a license...

While I'm deeply saddened that people who do not know how/when to use their headlights are still able to obtain a driver's license, I feel morally obligated for the safety of those poor souls on the road around you, to inform you that should you find yourself in foggy conditions to also NOT use your high beams regardless of time of day/night.

I know this isn't an answer to your question, but since we're covering Basic Headlight Use 101 I figured it'd be beneficial to point out some otherwise obvious headlight usage information.

I already know not to use the high beams during fog but on a clear night, what do I use? I see so many drivers using high beams at dawn and at night with other traffic, so I just followed but I don't know if it's right. Also, I've lived in the city for most of my life (using public transits etc...) and I've just driven my first night drive last night. Pretty new to all this headlight must-do's.

The transition from dark night to the early pre dawn light is sometimes tricky, that is why we were taught to use the low beams, but that was with ancient sealed beam headlights, hot halogens or HIDs....

Just relax and take it easy on your night drives and you will learn what is best for your style.
