from my calculations and actually testing to see how far I could push it the gas light comes on 1/2 gal before the E so roughly 15miles. +/- and then there is about 3/4-1 gallon after the E so about 30miles.
I have driven 50 miles after the light comes on without running out of gas but I didnt want to push it any farther

Yeah I have done over 30miles with the light on heh risky but at times I was in the hole $$ wise. It's better to be doing highway than street though if you have automatic in this situation.
I think it's prob. best to just always keep the tank 50% or more full at all times if possible. Running while the tank is on "E" is not very good for the engine.

I'm sure the xA is just a little different... but for my tC, the tank is supposed to e 14.5 gallons. If I fill up as soon as the light comes on, I'm putting just over 11 gallons in. So there would "technically" be about 3 gallons still left... which would leave roughly 75 miles of driving.
I've heard that there should be around 2 gallons left when the light comes on, so even that would leave a conservative 40-50 miles left.
I would guess the xA is at least similar in that there would be close to 2 gallons left in the tank.
I've driven my tC down to when the needle is actually below the final bar of the gauge and is covering up part of the light. And even then I still put less than 13.5 gallons in.
That said... if you're concerned at all, fill up when you can. You don't want to end up damaging your fuel pump by running too dry and the car sputtering.

I have done 38 miles in my '05 xB with the fuel light on.
Another time, I filled up a dozen miles after the light came on, and put 9.95 gallons in. Our tank is 11.9 gallons, so that means (at least for us boxes) that when the light comes on, we've got a 2 gallon reserve.
Under standard driving conditions, that gives a conservative theoretical minimum range, from the moment the light comes on, of 50-62 miles. (or 40 really exciting miles)
Your mileage may vary, obviously...literally. Same engine, much smaller car...what's the egg's theoretical minimum MPG? The trick is to flip the trip odometer the second the light comes on, so you don't screw yourself over.
As I said, I personally have done 38 miles. To the best of my knowledge, that's the furthest anyone has pushed their luck in either car.

Coming home from San Fran. a couple of weeks ago, while driving my friends '06 xA, his fuel light came on with approx. 35-40 miles before the closest gas station. I figured we'd be OK to make it back to our local Arco/gas stations. Well, low and behold just before entering the offramp... the car started to sputter- but luckily the gas station was less then a 1/4 mile away!! So, I'm thinking the gas light comes on about/between 1- 1.5 gallons before being actually empty. Given the fact that we only have 12 gallon tanks... thats about right I guess... 10% reserve light.

I've filled up right when my fuel light comes on many times before. It's been around ~9.9-10 gallons.
I've done a commute once while my fuel light was on and made it the whole 48 miles (running late that day), and then went to lunch, sat in drive through (forgot I needed to fill up), and then finally on my way home I filled up.
....My job makes me forget important things like fuel.
