Default Running out of gas...

Anyone here almost run out of gas in an XA? I'm interested to know what happens. How many miles can be driven after the little fuel light comes on? I just want to know how much I can push it before a situation becomes dire!

Thanks!

7 miles. once the fuel gauge shows on your screen you have 7 miles to fill it or get stuck where you are.

You shouldn't have to think about pushing it. You can do some damage to your engine if you run it out of gas. Not a good thing.

But... if the xA is even close to the tC, we have ABOUT 2 gallons left once the light comes on. I try not to go more than 30 or 40 miles after the light comes on - even if I know I might be able to make a few more. But I'll usually fill right after I see it anyways.

The xA gets around 300-350 per tank depending on driving habits and the environment.

It's not a good idea to run your car till empty since there is a chance you can gas starve your engine. Definitely a bad maintenance habit many people have~ It can lead to fuel pump failure in most cars.

You sure? You should be able to get at least 50 miles after the light comes on. Ligh meens 2 gallons left and at 30mpg you should be getting another 60 miles.

Wow. Is that how far you can drive before the fuel light turns on, or before the needle points to "E," or before the car actually sputters to a halt? If you really only get 250-275 miles on a full tank, you're getting only 21-23 mpg. Normally you should be doing a lot better than that, even in the city.

At 30 mpg, a full 11.9 gallon tank should take you 357 miles. (At 34 mpg you can go over 400 miles.) But the fuel light will come on and the fuel gauge will read empty before you've actually used up a full tank. And of course you should fill up before you actually empty the tank, to avoid possible damage.

I can use about 9.5 gallons before the gas signal comes on. At 30 MPG (which is what I get), that's 285 before I need to pump gas.

Driving habits, etc. counts in, too. But between **MY** regular gas fills, I get about 250-275 miles in.

Our manual states that you shouldn't let the car get below 1/4 tank because it's bad for the fuel pump.

Hmm..I wonder if I should put more gas in my car? My needle is constantly below a 1/4 tank. usually keep around 3-4 gallons in it.

Why? Is that to save weight?

That is especially true in older cars after scale has developed in the tank....Also, fuel cools the pump and if it sucks air, it gets hot in a hurry!!!

In my own mind, yes. I figure, gas weighs around 8 lb's a gallon. A full tank is 10 gallons (not counting the 2 gallon reserve past E). If I only keep in 3 or 4, I am saving around 50 lb's, which is quite a lot of weight. It's probably all a psychological thing in my head though, haha.

Yeah, I agree with oldmanatee... I was taught years ago that the scale in the bottom of the gas tank will get sucked up into the fuel filter and clog it.

I honestly don't think my fuel light comes on when there are 2 gallons left... A couple of times, my light came on a mile or two away from the gas station, and there was less than 1/4 gallon left in the tank. (My car gets 23 to 24 miles to the gallon because of the larger catback exhaust.)

I have lost nearly 20 lbs in the last 2 months, I could put an extra 2 gallons in and not be affected...
