Default scion xa break in period...

so i just got my xa..
got it with 42 miles on up too 700 now.

i've been told that for the first 500 you shouldn't go over 60 which i didnt.
i've tried to follow the other intructions of not racing the engine, hard stops or hard shifts.

the other day i was running late to work and had to haul ___ on the expressway (80mph)
the car had this funky burnty smell to it coming for the motor.
is that normal for a new car to have that smell to it?

i'd keep my eye on it... i think maybe your mind is smelling things that you normally wouldnt, bc you are looking for something to be... "off"

i think youre fine, but keep your eyes peeled.

I have had mine for a year and im very pleased. when i first got mine i smelled some things. I just figured it was gaskets sealing and the exccess gasket sealent burning off. give it some time to settle and you will be happy =)

well, my xA, i rode it pretty hard on the first 500, it had me worried too, maybe not too comforting, but my car is alive and well after 4k miles on currently.

Oh? I did notice during the test drive I had some funny smells, but after 5 or so miles it went away. I havent had any funny smells, but right from the dealer I did 85 down the interestate I know about no racing, red lining, constant speeds, but I may of screwed up somewhere.

Check to see if anything is leaking. Maybe the oil cap is not screwed on tightly?

I changed my oil and filter at 1600 and 3000 miles.

Don't worry about that smell. I had that burnt smell when i first got mine and asked the dealer about it before I left. It's just how it smells when the engine is so new. It'll go away within the first tank or so.

Rust inhibitors on the new engine give off a smell when warm. It wasn't mentioned by my Toyota dealer or manual, but the dealer for every other new car I've owned has forewarned me of the smell.

It should go away after a few thousand miles. If not, have it checked out. The main break-in advice I hear is to vary the speed for the first 500 miles or so.

Varying the speed is probably the most important thing imo. I think you'll be fine.

Ditto to everyone else that says you're good to go, especially after 700 miles. Gaskets actually get broken in during the first 100 miles or so. I'd recommend you change the oil around 2000 miles if you want to baby her and then just have fun!

I thought the break in time was the first 2K miles. At which time, your really not supposed to tack the rpm's at/over 4K . Going 80 mph ... thats at/or very close to 4K rpm's .. isn't it .

This is great info, ya'll. I buy my new xA tomorrow. I'm sure they're gonna tell me all of this info at the dealership, but it's nice to know in advance.
