My tires arent over inflated. The traction sucks as is for these oem good years, they do not need any help from me to get less traction.

I got 33 the last 6.4 gallons I used going from richmond to va beach and back. Mix of highway, congestion and stop and go driving. I did expect a bit better, but I left during rush hour and had to beat a few people off the line at stop lights to get in the correct lane for ramps and turns as my gps is late in telling me when to turn.

Nothing like launching at 3 grand and shifting at 5 to ruin your fuel economy. I also used a gear lower than normal for extra control as there are some crazy drivers in va beach. This way instead of gas/brake driving, I would just let off the gas and engine brake. Althought fuel economy is always on my mind, safety comes first.

I saw quite a few xbs too in the area including a lime green one with the license plate boxy.

Not sure how relevant it is, but to answer the topic question: I average 23 daily driving, and easily get 35 highway in my Cobalt SS Supercharged.

Ive always thought it was as efficient as the cavalier, but no one seems to know. I seriously looked at the hhr and the no lift shift, but seems it gets less than sticker 34mpg. I still hit 41 with my xa with my daily commmute.

Well I know the HHR SS has the same engine as my car, and being heavier there's no way it can get 34 highway very easily.

I typically shift at 2K, and try to cruise at 1.5K.

I have still been hovering around 28-32. I have been watching my shifting also. In first I shift around 2500, then 3500 for the other gears. Doesnt seem to make much of a diff.

Hows the no lift shift? irocz0r

Tobo22, you are shifting too early in first. If in rush hour stop and go I take 1st to 4 or 5 grand, then shift at 3500, then I immediately up shift to engine break keeping the revs high.

Its ok to cruse or idle along in the highest gear possible on flat level surface, but if you need to accelerate, you need a lower gear to keep it in the sweet spot of 3500-4200 rpms.

In heavy traffic on the interstate I let it idle in 5th doing 20-25 mph with no foot on gas, if I see a spot to merge or lane hop I hit 2nd and floor it.

Maybe you can take another route thats less top and go? Even if you go out of your way and the speed is steady like 40 mph, that is where you get your best fuel economy, even if it is a few more miles.

Cobb,

So i have been trying to take it higher in first gear. But it just seems like it levels off as far as speed and the engine just revs real high. I have been trying to take it to aleast 3k

how about when coming to a light. Isnt it better to just put it in neutral and drift??

tobo, are you needing to accelerate or just putter along? I fyou need to accelerate, you need to enter 2nd at 3 grand, to do that you got to take it to 5 in 1st or burn the clutch when entering 2nd.

In the block after block stop lights and everyone is red, I put it in first, take it to 5, shift to 2nd and gas, then let off and let it roll down to about 1500 rpms and brake if needing to stop sooner and push the clutch in and shift back to 1st. WIth the odb2 fuel essytem if you are above 1700 rpms or so with no throttle input it turns off the injectors.

z, 8 topics came up with a search of Gas Mileage Update, however none of them are by you. Do you have a link? I searched by your name and got the message, No topics or posts met your search criteria

Since my fan mod for colder ac, my fuel economy went down to epa est. Next to last tank 283 miles on 8 gallons 35mpg.

I have since installed a strup muffler, to my surprise the ac seems cooler and even with horsing around with it, I got 212 miles on 5.4 gallons of gas, 39mpg

pesudotoad, if your alignment is off, it can burn more fuel, anything that causes the car more effort in moving lowers fuel economy.

Yup, anything to make the car move easier with leff effort, the engine, etc increases the fuel economy. Some performance parts does this, lowering the car, making sure all wheels point in the same direction.

I too was at 37 or so til the day my manager quit and I spent several hours just cruzing the highway while listening to the radio. I could not sleep and they were splitting my team up across 7 floors of the building we worked in. I had just recently filled up, so when I stopped at a truck stop for something to eat, I topped off again. I had set my cruse for like 55, so I did not have to readjust it for some slow driver. I found during my fill up I had hit 46 mpg. I had traveled 100 and something miles too.

Since then I have lowed my car with prosport springs, removed the roof rack and put on the spoiler, removed the front rain guards from the windows, removed the snorkle. 2 weeks after my springs I got an alignment and found the rear was toe in.

These in regards to fuel economy helped to improve in addition to packing my lunch as taking a trip to buy something to eat, that short trip lowered my fuel economy as well.

Just recently I got a strup muffler and hopefully soon a 4 2 1 header. The mufler seems to help increase it, however my extra fan for colder ac made my mpg go down back to 38-36.
