woohoo, score one for the xA....sorta
i drove from victorville to vegas, about 175 miles. me and my fiance in our auto xA, my dad in his auto neon rental, and my brother and his girlfriend in their manual tC. oh, and for some reason we had all the luggage, so we had the most added weight too
. anyways, when we got to vegas we all filled up. xA=4.9 gallons, neon=5.6 gallons, tC=7.9 gallons. i thought that was kinda interesting, didn't think it would be that big a difference.
I have filled up my xA once. Probably have to fill it again in a couple of day. It only has about 400 miles on it. I have been driving it pretty easy, like they say to in the break in info in the owners manual. I haven't driven much over 70 mph or greater than 3500 rpm. I got slightly over 32 mpg in a combination of city and freeway driving.

Whenever someone would give me crap about the Echo, I'd always look real serious and say "I'll race you". When they'd look at me like I was nuts I'd say "10 gallons of gas - see who can go the farthest..."
:D :D :D
I'm very happy with the mileage on my xa too!
(provided I don't drive like a bat out of h*ll)
Does anyone ever ask you if your xa is a hybrid?
That's the first question people ask me, then they ask about the mileage. :?

i dont quite get posted mileage on my xa either (despite the fact that i am only NOT on the highway for 1 of the ~25miles of my commute), but then i also tend to accelerate a little (lot) more aggressively than i should so it doesnt surprise me when i dont get the mileage on the sticker. still, even given that, I'm still pulling in 31-32mpg - and i'm not complaining about that fact.

As long as you fill it up the same each time, you can use the pump gauge total. That is, if you let the pump click off and don't fill anymore, do it that way every time, or if you fill after it clicks, do it that way every time. Then use the pump gallons total to calculate the MPG. Obviously, if you let click off one time and then fill it after it clicks off, the calculation is gonna be wrongo!

That could make a big difference in the math.
You are correct, however, that there are variables that cause everyone's figures to differ. Not everyone has the same mods installed. Some mods improve fuel consumption and others make it worse.....plus all the mods add (or subtract) weight from the cars, which alter the fuel consumption. Also, if you drive like you're playing Gran Tourismo all the time (like I do), then obviously you won't get 38 MPG or better, while other more sane drivers will.
I don't think you quite got what I meant. Most people calculate their milage like this:
-You fill up your tank
-you drive X number of miles
-you fill the tank again
-you devide the number of miles driven by the amount of gas used.
The problem with this method, is that you may not "fill" the car the same each time. One time you may stop pumping as soon as the pump clicks off the first time. The next time, it may click off sooner if the gas was flowing in faster. Now you have less gas in the tank then the first time. Or, you may keep squeezing a little more in. Now you have more gas in than the first time. Either way, your results will be very different. The only way to do it accuratly, is to be sure that you have the exact same amount of gas in both "full" tanks. That may be hard to do.
