xB owner thinking of switching to xA.
Regardless of resale value, you WILL lose money when you trade one car for another that's basically the same.
Think about it, the dealer won't do the deal unless they make some kind of profit. They're not interested in letting you just "trade" cars off their lot.
The differences between xA and xB will be minimal. And the potential $$$ you will lose on the trade could be used to mod your xB.
I say keep you box.

oh yeah and both platforms are the same with a few tiny exceptions..... the whole subframe is the same on the box as it is on the egg....
Even with low depreciation, it still exists. No way are you going to get all your money back, including all the taxes and fees.

Again, I love the xA, but I couldn't financially justify the trade. For the amount of loss, I'd just turbo the xB. Way better bang for the buck.
well first of all, i do love my xA, but i have to disagree about the resale value.....Consumer Reports rank it fairly low in over all value...and i tlked to the dealer ship about trading my '06 with 10K miles and they only offered me $9K, so in six months it lost $5,000 in value

Hey, I'm not usually flame this much, but you brought it on with your stupid comment about research. I'll end my flame here.
The original poster is looking for insightful help, besides "buy buy buy!" If you really love the xA, then the trade might be worth it. But from a strictly numbers standpoint, it makes no sense. The only chance you MIGHT have would be to sell the xB private party. Even then, you're still going to lose at least a grand or two.
I was talking about the xBs resale value in general but all 3 relatively hold their value if not increase on KBB depending on where you live and yes its private party sales because dealers use some whacked out auction resale calculator so they can make the most profit on THEIR resale
as for getting all your money back no you not going to get it all back but that's what happens when you buy a NEW car your going to lose the $500 import fee plus tax, surcharge, licensing, and registration fees ......blah blah blah....
But what does money matter if your not happy with your car........ buy the car you want ..... end of story no else's opinion should matter
djct regardless of my spelling and "lack" of research your comments are just as useless as mine on this topic....... I actually find it rather funny that you quoted me twice...... silly boy
oh yeah good flame job

You're neglecting the fact that he was asking for input. Odds are, with the responses he's been getting, that he is not thinking about this financially. It would make me very happy to go out and buy a porsche 911, and I could afford one too, but it would rule out the possibility of buying a house AND a nice exotic car in 10 years (my goal). With my current spending/saving, it is VERY possible. And that's because I'm doing MY research. Is it so bad that I would help someone do the same?
There's a term called n****r rich... And I HATE that word. But anyway, it refers (besides the racist connotation that I loathe) to people who spend unnecessarily or above their means, either or. Ifor those people I genuinely care about, I try to help them accumulate wealth, rather than depreciating assets. That's how you become successful in life.

LMAO!!!
I love this thread!! Great discussion and Don, I'm keepin the box.
It's not about lost money. I was over that when i started thinking about all this. My good friend at the dealership, with whom I dealt in the first place because I've known him a few years, says it'll cost me about $2k more than what I'm financing now, AND that my xB could very well be worth it's original value in a few months when the new xB rolls out.
No more new ones means that close to new ones will INSTANTLY become worth more money.
Toyota may have done us box owners a favor by redesigning the xB and discontinuing the 1st gen.
I may se where I'm at when that time rolls around. I'm sure there will be some trade-ins happening due to the new model relkeases. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a good deal ... I dunno. For now, I'm happy with the box...
Thanks for all the responses. I got enough of what I was after... some opinions from both sides.
Peace... Dino

On a side note, I myself am curious as to what will happen with resale values after the new xB comes out. My gut instinct says that it won't go up in value (maybe a little bit, but not for long). IMO, the xB is still a cult car, and the demand is just not going to be high enough to sustain used market prices (I have a masters in economics). However, there's no real way to predict the outcome, and anything is possible at this point. It's just that the econo-car market has recently been flooded by new car models at low prices, which makes it all the more difficult to raise prices on the Gen1 xB. Maybe in 10 years, we might see a rebound... But who knows? Only time will tell.
True, but for Toyota, the Scion line is for collectors. They are hoping the resale value goes up as they refresh the lines every few years. Which is why these runs were pretty limited to begin with.
From what I've been seeing prices have only been going one way. Up. We'll see where we're at in another five years.

I know I bought my xB as an investment... Real Estate? Please... the real money is in Japanese mini-wagons. Through my research, the Gen 2 xBs will not be well received, thus resulting in people paying top dollar for the Gen 1s. I see my '06 going for $50K easy...
You guys crack me up... the friggin car cost $14K, which in the automotive market is like a paper napkin. If you can't decide between the xA and xB, just get them both. If 31 vs 33mpg is impacting your life, maybe you should sell the car and buy a bike.
