After reviewing and planning and re-reviewing i have come to the conclusion that the 1nz may not necisarily be a bad power plant to build off either. Before evryone jumps, hear me out.

...After reading this: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=67782
I have decided that with a stand alone management system for our motors there is great potential. Im not saying that there is ever going to be as much room in the economical 1nz, but at the same time its a much more "friendly" choice.

My big issues with performing this swap would be
1. motor mounts (not something you can exactly throw together)
2. unpredictable suspension (caused by the offset weight of the engine and the transmission (which i neglected to factor in transmission weight in my previous post)
3. Firewall modifications
4.axles "w/ 4 lug hubs" ($$$)
5.and finally hood clearance where there is nothing even close on the markey that would work (i.e. c-one) and i feel it would look stupid with some sort of raised hood.

...sorry to let you all down but it doesent look like im going to be the first, nor do i really want to be.

...BUT, i may have some tricks for a standalone management system for our motors if anyones intrested. Hit me up on xatuner.com for more info.
So even though Twiddler was only able to make about 100hp N/A with the 1NZ, you think you can hit the same power numbers as a 1ZZ just by going stand alone? You're talking 110 hp+ to the wheels. I'd love to hear you plans for the 1NZ now.
I assume you will start with typical bolt-ons like intake, header and exhaust. What else do you have up your sleeve besides engine management? And what do you plan to use for EMS? Haltech, AEM, Mega Squirt?
It's obvious you aren't concerned with legality. Since you are already switching over to stand alone. Are you considering digging into the bottom end as well? Killerxromances has put down some pretty big numbers by bumping up compression to 11:1 with custom pistons and E-Manage Ultimate.
Oh and are you tuning yourself? That is where you will probably take the biggest hit. My understanding is that it is a far more complicated process to properly tune a car from scratch with a stand alone than it is to tune with a piggy back. The gains should be more significant though.

..as far as would it fit, yes if the 1zz fit (you may have hood clearance issues though as i believe the 2zz may be an inch or so taller due to different head/ valve cover design.
Thanks for the intrest im on my way out the door right now to go look at a corolla
It really is sad you would make such a blatent misconception and speak from authority as if the two engines really are like twin siblings.

The 1ZZ-FE is a great engine (great being torqey, expendable, and cheap to replace). I have one in my 2000 MR2 spyder and fellow spyder owners turbo them daily and then replace them for $500. When tuned right their cheap econo-cast pistons last quite a long time and can see upwards of 220 whp all day long. The highest reliable supercharged power rating I have seen was 240 whp with a Rotrex SC and a Power FC professionally tuned. This lasted a LONG time due to the tune alone. The same owner is now running a rotrex'ed 2ZZ at similar psi and is putting down 330 whp...again, thats not because of a different head.

The 2ZZ-GE is a COMPLETELY different beast. This is not the honda Vtec vs non-Vtec world where a head and some fancy electronics seperates the two. Nor the Subaru world where you just bolt a EJ257 (STi) short block to a EJ25 (RS) head and presto chango: bullet proof turbo fun.

The 2ZZ is a performance designed engine from the ground up with help from Yamaha. While Yamaha helped design the 1ZZ it was more for effiency and economy (somewhat like the 1NZ's roots). The stroke and bore are different, the bottom end is completely different, the heads are different, the intake manifolds are different, and the electronics are a night and day difference. All of this also makes for a drastic difference in compression.

A good running 1ZZ will put out mid to low 120's at the wheels on a mustang dynomometer and a good running 2ZZ will push 155 to 160 on that same dyno. One attains as hectic 6800 rpm redline where the power is falling flat as a pancake and one is just stretching its legs at 8300 rpms where the fuel cut kicks in (this is not just due to a higher redline).

The 1ZZ is a great engine and is phyically almost the same size as the 2ZZ. This is a VERY common swap for the MR2 Spyder and most engines can be found for around $2,000 if you look hard enough. The transmissions are different in ratio and the GT-S trans has of course a 6th gear. Many people just keep the 1ZZ for emission sake and mess around with NA bolt-ons and forced induction. They put out great power and like I mentioned, are cheaper to replace than a set of tires.

I didnt jump on here to sound like a jerk but lets not assume because they both are ZZ engines they are "the SAME" because that is not the case. I would argue availability, cost, lower compression, available TRD supercharger to bolt on, or dozens of other reasons.

Goodluck with the swap and i am sure you can get some MASSIVE gains out of the 1ZZ, its a proven combination =).

Default Here is a little something...2ZZ yaris

I know there is not alot on toyota swaps for echo, XA, XB, yaris. Here is a little something that I hope inspires a little hope for these little toyotas. There is a little more possible than most think, Just people don't care to find out.

IT is a tight fit but but the 1ZZ and 2zz fit under the hoods of all these little 1nz-fe powered cars.

Nice! The xB has more room than that so it should be a piece of cake. Thanks for that pic!

I love the pic of that Yaris with the 2ZZ in it. Everyone else notice that there's no battery in the engine bay? IIRC, the guy who did the swap on that car ended up putting it under the passenger seat or someplace random...

I'd mount it out back anyhow just for more balanced weight distribution. I'm thinking with the xB tho the battery would still fit up front, just in a different spot.

yes 1zz supercharged will beat a 2zz even with mods. same hp stock 2zz versus trd s/c'd 1zz BUT the 1zz will have about 20 more ft/lb torque.

and you can up the boost , as well as add , intake , header , full exhaust , lightweight pulleys . blahbidy blah.

a mildly hopped up supercharged 1zz will have about 180 WHP versus a stock sc'd 1zz which has 163 whp.

but a 2zz has 180 crank hp stock so about 160 ish whp.

so yeap.

and both 1zz and 2zz engine dimensiosn are about an inch larger in ever dimension compared to the 1nz

I have seen an ad for a special TRD prepped Yaris with the 2ZZGE in a Japanese magazine back in Aug. So I wouldn't give up on this swap for either the 1zz or 2zz I myself don't own a scion yet but did have a base matrix setup with intake, pulleys, and exhaust and i enjoyed the performance of that motor over the civic h/b i had with intake, header, hi-flow cat, cat-back exhaust and performance head package from Gude Performance which had 65mm throttle body, ported intake manifold, stage 1 camshaft, ported and polished head milled, and 3 angle valve job plus skunk 2 cam sprocket (motor was single cam no vtec).
Now if the factory can make this swap happen then all we need to do is find out where to have the custom engine mounts put. Purchase the necessary suspension components, wiring harness and diagrams, where the battery was relocated to and upgraded brake system and axles plus hub assembly. Basically get in touch with toyota to gain access to these items it won't be easy but if enough people nationwide keeps pestering them we might get somewhere or even if you people in Japan i.e military personnel stationed in japan or okinawa could help to get these parts shipped here or may even give points of contact to acquire what we need to make these swaps possible.

Bleh, if you don't go swap...I/H/E, perrin pulley, ACT stg2 clutch, lightened flywheel, milled head, motec m4 system, 2zz injectors with custom fuel rail, slicks and some other lil crap i cant remember and you will be more than happy with your runs. Haven't met a celica that can touch me yet and I dont think I ever will. Runs 9.7 1/8ths on average and this lil pos engine can take a beating if u tune.

In the south most of the local tracks are 1/8 mile ones. There are formulas to convert 1/8th mile times over to 1/4 mile ones tho.

Most vehicles are set up different tho for 1/8 mile.
