Default Arg... VSC/Trac Off and Check engine Lights

I was driving to work this morning when my VSC / Trac off and check engine lights came on,, The book just tells me to take it to the dealer so I will be doing that tomorrow morning,

Any ideas as to what this could be? I had heard a pop when I was stopping at a red light, I checked and didnt see anything, I thought I had ran over a bottle or something..

its an 05 auto with 26,xxx

Well on new model Toyotas and Scions, all these lights come on when the Check Engine light comes on. It could be something as simple as the gas cap loose or not sealing or something else. there are over 100 things that will set the Check Engine light.

Ok back from the dealer,

Took it in this morning and the dealer was super cool, The checked it out and the code it pulled was a 0012 / 0021 I cant remember right off hand but he said it was the Camshaft was out of alignment or something along those lines.

It was not driving funny so they chalked it up to being in error, They reset the computer for me and they drive it up and down the street, it didnt trip and I drove it on to work with no problems. He said if it happens again then they will have to break down the motor to see whats going on..

well, I was watching this thread b/c I was having the same lights...took it to the dealer today, and it pulled a P012 -

'camshaft position retarded'

so, it seems I have a retarded cam.

ok...now that I got THAT out of the way, I asked him about next steps. Clearly the code is an error, becasue the car would not run if the cam was out of position, or so I am told. He told me tearing out the engine would absolutely be the last resort, and that there were other things to try, provided the code throws again. It hasn't come up since monday night... fingers crossed.

any update sciondrgn?

Actually it does run with the cam out of position. That's what the VVT does, it varies the cam positioning. The code's saying somthing's wrong with the VVT or more likely the sensor that monitors it.

any idears what might cause a code like that to trip in error? might that be worse than having a retarded cam?

Check this thread:

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...=28567&start=0

My lights came on Sunday night, so I did a quick search on here... saw this thread, reset my ECU, and the lights are gone after 1 day of driving... Hopefully they stay gone

first of all, don't forget that the lights come on for a reason. Ignoring problems doesn't make them go away. Second, both the OP and I are haveing a specific issue that is only partially addressed by that thread, but thank you for sharing. the specific code being thrown is
p012 'camshaft position retarded'

It's worth noting that this comination of lights will come on when ANY severe diagnostic code is thrown, not only for the more common gas cap, maf and knoc snesor issues.

I would love to hear what the tech had to say. We too experienced the same problem but have not gone to the dealer yet.

Thanks!

We had the same code on our XA and the Deland FL Dealer replaced an oil control valve and told us to test it.
They said techsupport recomended it.
Ok, if there is a Sensor monitoring the valve some how and it is an oil lifter maybe, but how could the oil pressure affect cam timing, besides burring out the journals?
The car runs fine but we lost like 10 miles to the gallon.

If a few people are experiencing the same issues, could it just be faulty sensors? I can't see the cam going out in new engines. More often than not, engine problems are electrical.
