Default Auto to a Manual

Ok so hears the deal. I drive a 05 Xa and my buddy drives a 05 Xb. They both have auto transmissions and needless to say we are kinda bored of it. We both perfer 5 speeds and were wondering if anyone whould know how much a conversion would cost.

We've been debating doing this for sometime now so any info you guys could give us would be very helpful.

Trade your cars in for sticks--cheaper and much more reliable than a conversion.

Its been said a million times before, Heck i was one of them who asked it, but its just not economicly possible. Most say to trade in and pay difference, many are in this boat but i got over it in a few days, so hopefully you will too. Trust me its better that way. BUt if you still cant get over it, then i think what your looking at is 3500.00 if you do it yourself. thats what i think was the estimate made.

well i had a tc in auto wanted to do the same looked around and asked about changing it manual you are looking at 3-5 grand so i pretty much just traded it in for a manual i didnt lose anything from my tc when i traded it in cause i was pretty much new so your best bet is to trade it in

Iv already put to much money into modding this one. F it I guess, just have to live with it, I will just have to do the shift-boot conversion thats cheap ;)

Yeah, but you had some facts ---$3500 is a lot and what about reliability.

Trading it in for a stick would be easiest but i've already got so much work into the Xa i have now, plus it as 45,000 miles on it so i dont know what i would get for a trade in. Also i would have to go out and do all the work that i had on the previous Xa. So, it would still end up costing me a lot.

Is the conversion not very reliable? And has anyone done it yet?

I was in a position before buying my xB to get a 2003 Corolla S that was "professionally" swapped from Auto to manual trans. Granted it was used, and the shifting felt like stock, but when I was about to put a deposit and asked for a smog check (since the car was more than 4 years old) he couldn't pass smog because his check engine light was on and supposedly it couldn't pass because the Trans ECU was showing as auto, when it fact it was swapped with a manual. He told me he can get it fixed, but never did, so I flaked on that offer.

Truth be told, if you are in a position one day to sell your car and u tell someone it was an auto-to-manual swap, they may not like it. I would just trade it in for a stock manual and start over.. simply not worth the headaches that can potentially happen..

Just my 2 cents

Transmission $300 (Junkyard)
Axles $120 (Autozone, use auto ones as cores)
Pedal/Shifter/Cable Assembly $150 (Junkyard)
Gauge Cluster $50 (Junkyard)
Manual ECU $75 (Junkyard)
Dealer Flash ECU with mileage $? + BJ
Transmission mount $50 (Dealer)
Clutch/Flywheel/Hydraulic parts $350 (Dealer/Aftermarket)

This is a cheap estimate, and probably 50% accurate, as wiring/parts availiability is not factored in. Just thought I'd break it down before recommending trading in the car for a manual. You could look into a shift kit or manual valve body though. Would be cheaper/easier and could make the auto a lot more fun to drive.

if you can't stand it that much, remove all your upgrades and put everything back to stock and trade it in on a manual rs4 (or rs3) or just a manual. OR you can always look for a sucker that will buy it with your upgrades for close to what you want and then you will have a fresh pallet to work with again.

just please do not try to swap out the tranny, unless you are made of money, then screw the 5spd and go for the gts 6spd from the celica, you know that if an echo can do it then so can a xa/b.
