Anyone recall seeing an aftermarket intake that has a larger filter, but sits inside of a box? It has an inlet that runs up to the grille, so that the air is forced into the intake.......I saw an ad for it over the weekend and looked at their site, but now I can't find it!!!

And yes....... I did several searches, but coudn't comb through all 12,000 results for boxed intake

Yeah, it is pricey........ but I dont like several of the intakes ,based purely on their design.

I don't like the Typhoon because it gets way low and you could get snow/water in it.

The short ram types would (IMHO) lose power, as they're sitting on top of a hot engine.

Best would be some type of forced air induction, like this box................ right?

Have you seen the short rams for the xB? They don't sit on "top" of the engine, or anywhere near it. They're usually under the headlight or foglight. I don't think this box intake would be any "colder" than a regular intake. It's all marketing.

The Blitz sits on top of the engine, judging from the pics.

The others are off to the side, yes- still inside the hot engine bay.

You're saying that forcing the air from outside into a channel that leads directly to the intake is no different than one tucked into the corner of the engine bay?

There's air blowing thru the front grills, it won't make that much difference. Where does the air inlet for this end up? Aren't you going to create the same potential to either suck warm engine compartment air or suck moisture in? (neither of which seem to be an issue from what I've read/heard/seen.) You could probably add a refrigeration unit to the intake and not get too much difference...

That wont be much better than the Stock airbox. and as for Snow/Water getting in the lower intakes even with a 2 inch drop unless you drive through a puddle 6"+ deep water shouldn't get in there. I'm not sure about xB's but xA's have a plastic underbody panel that pretty much keeps everything from underneath getting into the engine bay.
As for that box being anytype of forced air induction you would have better luck just rerouting the stock so the intake end is pointed out the foglight hole.

How do you plan on keeping rain out of a direct induction system?? You sound like you want the air to come directly from the outside into your engine so it will be as "cold" as possible. How about when it rains, what exactly are you directly forcing into the engine??

You have to keep the filter dry somehow, and the air you suck in must be away from the rain. That's why MOST intakes (including the stock airbox) draw air from an area tucked behind the headlight. Any snorkel type direct induction is fine for the race track, but in a heavy downpour or snow storm you're asking for it.

You'd have to suck a puddle to really cause damage. As long as you don't get so much that it blocks the piston travel up, the engine will pass thru the rain water. But the point is, if you're worried about it with one, the potential is there with the other. I'd just get the drop-in filter before going thru that... But it would look different - I just don't know if it would work any better...

I wouldn't even mess with the Volant intake. While it's an awesome idea the excecution is poor. It makes the air filter very accesible and easy to service, but it blocks your master cyclinder resevior, positve and negative battery terminals, coolant resevior and will not work with any strut bar. Kinda bassackwards for a filter that you only need to mess with every 40-50,000 miles at the expense of not being able to jump start a dead battery, etc....

well compared to the AEM one.its chrome and stands out..that just looks like a battery with a hole or a fuse box..IMO.. smile your on fuji camera

Well i just got the WEAPON*R Dragon intake and i could tell a difference and paid $116 shipped. Puts the Filter right behind the headlight but also when you get on it if you have your hand under the bumper you can fill it sucking the air up from the ground so you get the same effect as cold air.

Having a direct route into the filter from the front of the car would be a bad idea if it rained or snow, yes- which is why in my old car, there was a bend/dip in the pipe to keep that stuff out.

I hadn't seen the plastic underskirt on the xB before. Guess that would effectively handle all of my concerns.

I just installed the Typhoon in my XB (automatic) and I'm very impressed with the power and it looks like it dosent sit low enough to suck in water unless you decide to cross a river!? And it includes a water resistant cover that gose over the filter and still sucks in air! For $300 it was well worth the money!!
