Default build ur own intake???

question for you all.....i dunno if it makes a difference, but, im in the chicago land area of illinois, and the pepboys out here started offering all these parts that are chrome plastic, they come in straight, and all sorts of angles, couplers and even mass-airflow sensor hookups......they basically have orings, and they slidetogether and have a built inclamp, u tighten down the clamp and it makes a perfect seal. they offer highflow airfilters too, basically, you can build ur own intake, and put it wherever u want by buying all the angles and piping. they even sell adaptors to add on a hose w/ a forced induction cone to ram more air into the fliter itself. i kno, it might sound cheezy, but, it'll save a lot of money, and i cant see why it wouldnt be a bad investment as aposed to buying a $200+ induction setup. think its worth it????

2. i was gunna either run it all the way down to infront of the bumpercover like most kits are, but, then i have a custom grill on mine, and i wasthinkin, why no run it so the filter sits right infront of it, that way i will constantly have a ton of air being forcedinto the airfilter, and i would avoid most dirt kicked up by the lower valance. what do u think?

Ive tried these things on my xA. Bottom line, not enough room to make anything good and also, the tubing is too big of a diameter so the MAF wouldnt calibrate properly for it. I tried many ways to make it work, but couldnt get it to. I spent probably $100 on the parts, but couldnt use any of them. Im gonna try to put them on another car. The brand I bought was Spectre from PepBoys.

I just bought one of the Ebay CAIs that was about $70 including shipping. It just came in today and Im gonna try to put it on this weekend. Ill let you know how it works.

mass sensor detects how much air is goin to your engine then calculates how much fuel it needs to mix with that air... if it is to much air you are to lean... not enough your to rich... if the pipe is to big it will throw a cel and car won't run properly... most of hte time the pipe for cai is 2.25" or 2.5" pipe...

depends on who made it... like my k&n has a baffle right in front of the sensor to make the air squeeze together and trick the sensor into thinkin it is still the same as stock... which didn't work thats why kn one likes the K&N typhoon intake... cause it throws a cel... but i grinded that bad boy down to about havle it size and my cel lights are no more... shouldn't worry about it the company more than likely thought about the size and probably came up with the same idea K&N did and trick the sensor...

well not sure about the xB but (this is gonna get weird) my godparent's son (godcousin?), well anywho, he used 2.5 exhaust tubing and a high flow filter and made him an intake with that. looks like crap but it gets the job done. it matches his sentra perfectly though

I have an air razor thing in the intake in between the filter and the crankcase arm and MAF.
Maybe that is tricking it a little. It doesnt do much else...

"back in tha day" - we used to make intakes outta everything, dryer hose, vents for intakes, the "uni-piping" from autozone, pep boys, etc. - didnt have MAF's on our cars, but i agree w/ if it doesnt show a CEL, you should be okay -- if you're looking for GAINS - id even go with a knockoff injen SR (best dynod intake as per the stiky in power hungry) and its a cheaper, better investment

Thanks for the answer. My imagination was running away with me.

2.75 is pretty subtle I guess.

How wide were the pep boys tubes?

Mine is a e-bay chrome 2.75 and KN filter but thats it for the kit as far as good stuff.

I then bought nice a red silicone hose and t-bolt clamps. Also ordered the oil infuser and bumper from Injen.

I then put a black pre-filter over the KN from Injen. That way with the NISH supplied mesh fog light insert when you look in you just see black. And if any drops of water get in I feel pretty secure. And it looks cool.

It was a less expensive route for me.

Thanks for the info.

I havent measured, but I think the pepboy ones (spectre) are 3" diameter. And with their MAF adapter, the tip of the MAF isnt anywhere close to the middle of the tube. The car just bucked and jumped and smelled like unburnt gas really bad. I even tried reseting the computer to recalibrate with the new intake, but to no avail.

I wonder if I took out the air razor thing would I get a CEL'

I just stuck it in for a goof. 20 bucks.

I also noticed some of the FUJI ones had the tornado or turbonator thing in theres so I figured try it.

Too cold to experiment now.

I really appreciate this feedback

Cool!

No CEL for you? CEL is my new acronym now....ha.

How cool is the air going in from that point.

No water problem there.

The pic above is not my car, but I did rock the same setup for a while. No CELs, no problems... Then again, no real real gains either. Not much sound, no more performance. Once I did the Injen SRI the sound and power difference was huge. It sure looks cool though! and only costs about 30 bucks.
