CAI, Questions
I have had my XB for almost a month now. I have not added anything to it, other than miles. About 1700 now!! I am getting about 38mpg commuting to work and some driving with the family on the weekends. 5spd manual tranny.
I have been looking at the CAI's and I know they add some HP, but would like to know what they do for MPG. I want to get my XB over 40mpg as this is why I bought the box in the beginning. Now, this box has grown on me so much that I just love it. I drive over 80 miles per day for work and it rides great. It was kind of stiff and bouncy to start with, but it rides very smooth now, I guess the suspension had to break in as well.
One more Q about the CAI, where do they get the air from, inside the engine bay or via a hole in the fender well? If the later, do you cut a hole or is there one already there?

I didn't keep good enough records before my CAI to tell you what it does for mileage.
Most CAIs have their filter in front of the left wheel, below the battery. None require a hole in the bumper, but there is one that puts an adapter in one of the fog light holes.
Moved to PH.

you should see a slight increase in MPG i know i have and many others have too and yes.....cold air intakes for the most part get the air from in the fenderwell sometimes a "cold box" is used that incorperates a enclosed heat sheild i know that Matchbox is testing one under his sponsership from Volant i belive its a multi-port cold box for the xB utilizing certain openings on the car pretty odd looking but if it works do it.....my self i have the K&N Typhoon and LOVE IT
You should see a slight increase in MPG. I've asked some of the local guys here if they noticed better MPG and they all said yes. As far as where it get air from "Max" is 100% correct. If you're interested we have the Injen intakes and the AEM intakes.

Thanks for the feedback from everyone. I also looked at the dyno tests that Scionic posted back in January with the different CAI's and those numbers show improvements can be made. The only other test I would like to see is a dyno test with the stock box intake with the K&N installed as well. The water issue concerns me as well as other have said in other discussions during heavy rain. I have had one car in my life that died due to drowning in a creek. Don't care to have my XB suffer the same fate. Right now, my money needs more input about MPG gains as I want my mod to pay me back. Go fast is of no real concern as I did not buy a vette LOL. My XB was pure MPG driven purchase, with an added bonus of the fun it returns.
I am sure more info will surface in the near future and I am not touching anything till after at least 5k miles are clocked.

how do you get 38MPG going 80mph to work...thats just impossible on most xb's on this forum and mine, mileage goes down significantly at 4k rpm on mine....and thats exactly 80mph. how do u figure ur mpg anyhow?

maybe an xA but not a xB

I drive less than 70mph while on the interstate and shift at or below the 3k mark, no jackrabbit starts or stops. That mark has even been acheived with the wife and kids along while doing some city driving mixed in the Hway driving. About 20% city and 80%hwy. I have about 2000 miles on my xB now, almost a month after it was purchased. It don't sit still much.
The normal rule goes More Air In = More Fuel In. So under normal conditions, gas milage would go down. Now in some areas of the rev range, the engine will make its power better then normal, giving better gas milage. I drive 70% city 30% freeway & have got up to 39.5mpg & I have a SRI & exhaust. I shift at 2k normaly or 2.5 if driving hard. When on the open road, I tend to travle around 55-80mph depending on posted speeds
