Default can i swap from auto to manual, anyone been down this road?

so i had random thought to get rid of the auto on the xa and convert it to a manual. question is or has it been done and can anyone give me any advise as to where i can source parts and what all is needed. also can any other trans such as a 6 speed from a celica be used with minimal mods to make it work, or do i have to stick to the same trans offered for the xa from the factory? also are there any companies that offer different gears for it? thanks

so i came across this list from a tc forum and figured i would share it. more then likely the part names are the same, but the individual parts are different along with prices.

"THE PARTS LIST FOR AN AUTOMATIC TO MANUAL TRANSMISSION SWAP

The prices that are listed are for the parts brand new, and i have not included labor prices. I couldn't find the price for everything, but i'm sure you can clearly see that if you are buying these parts new, you should have considered trading your car in for a manual in the first place. But anyways, feel free to comment.

Manual Transaxle - $1,852.95
Seal kit - $21.44
Axle assy Left - $343.75 Right - $399.66
Mount, tc, front, manual trans - $64.31
Mount, tc, rear, manual trans - 05-06 $92.53
Master cylinder - $77.50
Slave cylinder - $44.68
Flex hose - $27.90
Hydraulic lines master cyl to flex hose - $14.07
Hydraulic lines, slave cyl to flex hose - $9.02
Flywheel - $266.02
Instrument cluster - $204.26
Ecm
Clutch
Clutch Pedal Assembley
Shift Linkage
Center console
ECU

$3238.09 without the parts without prices... not including labor."

i am usually pretty good at finding parts for cheaper and assuming that these are all new i could probably knock this down to around a thousand dollars. EBAY is a wonderful thing. Also after doing some searches found out that i can swap out the 5th gear from a yaris to bring down the cruising RPM's.

However my question still stands, has anyone successfully did this swap and what are some things you ran into along the way.

again, possible, yes, economical, no. Yes, you can find parts for cheaper on eBay, will they all be in proper working condition? you might not know until you try to get it all to work.

If you want a car with a manual, buy one with a manual.

as for the 6 speed manual from the celica work, it can work, but I believe you have to notch a frame rail to make it fit, which isn't a good thing.

i swapped my xb2 to a manual for $900. no one buys a transmission from toyota. i picked it up from a junk yard for $200, and installed a quaife lsd as well.

I'm with drax here. A lot of work for what kind of payoff? It's cooler? Faster? These aren't exactly performance cars, guys. Also, think of resale value. 70% of the population doesn't even know how to drive a manual. That will really narrow down you potential buyers.

If you want to go fast, buy a Mustang or something.

no freaking way, and i thought it was corvette, man was i mistaken. dude, i've owned three trans am's, the later 2 both were ls1's, don't know what im talking about do a search on google. the last one of the two was cam'd putting down 420 whp and all of them were manual. don't preach to me about fast or performance. maybe we just like to tinker.............thats why i'm working on it, hell it's my wife's but we recently bought a new suv so she drives it now and i drive the xa everywhere. by NO means is it fast but it is fun, can be more fun, and can be zippy. i want a manual because it is more fun to drive over an auto. I AM NOT going to trade this car in, it is going to stay with us for a long time just because it runs so good, very solid, and the longer you hold onto a used car the more it pays you back. i work on it and mod it because im bored and that what i like to do, on top of getting my AAS in automotive technology.

STOP saying 'I' would do this, or 'you should do this'. answer the question at hand.

HAVE ANYONE DONE THIS SWAP BEFORE
