Default CV Joints or Axles?

Hey Everyone,

I have a slight problem with my 04 Xb. When I am in first gear and I start to roll, if I dump the clutch slightly(NOT HARSH) but slightly, I can hear a thump on the passenger side front axle. I have 163K miles and I am on the second motor and trans on the car but since the motor replacement I have not driven the car hard. I need to know if anyone ever had this problem and what did they do to fix it. The axles feel a little loose but I am not sure how much play they should have and how I can find out what may be wrong. Ant suggestions will help.

Thanks.

put emergancy brake on and have someone give alittle gas and let clutch out(powerbraking) and see which mount is moving the most. you'll need to do it in reverse and 1st gear to get motor to move in both directions

Okay so if i determine that it is not the motor mounts then what is my other option? I am kind of strapped for cash so taking it to a repair man is out of the question. I am pretty knowledgable in mechanics but have never owned a front wheel drive car so i am kind of confused at what this could be.

I doubt it's the cv joint/axel. To test them turn the wheel all the way to one side and accelerate. If you hear a clicking sound they're effed.

I second the motor mount idea. IDK about the box but on my tc you can get a good view of all 3 motor mounts with minimal disassembly(and a million candle power a flashlight ). Get the service manual(from scionlife.org) and find them.

^above comment is true, but the axles can still be bad without making a clicking noise... the clicking noise only happens if you rip a boot and/or all the grease comes out. do you hear the thump when you hit bumps too??
