flame thrower exhaust question

Default flame thrower exhaust question

Ok so I have been tinkering with this for a while now, I how power running to the back, and my spark plugs are mounted, I plug the spark plug wire in and nothing happens(no spark). I know the setup works b/c I can put a scrap peice of wire into the end of the spark plug wire and ground it on the exhaust and it sparks, I plug the spark plug back in and nothing.

Any one have any idea why my spark plugs don't work?

And this is all new stuff so none of it shound be bad, it worked on the bench.

And fo all the haters out there, I know this is "bad" I "might catch the car on fire" so unless you can help me, I don't need to hear it.

i'm thinking 2 things, 1st your not putting enough power to the plug..you may need to wire up a coil pack of some kind......2nd if johnny law see's you shoot'n flames, your taking a ride with him. i'm sure he'll turn the lights on for ya to, lol, good luck

I AM running a coil, that is what I can't figure out

I'm guessing your not grounded. If your getting a spark when grounding with a wire than mabey your not grounded.

so I need to ground the spark plug or the exhaust? or both?

Yeah the plug has to be grounded to the coil circuit and don't be sparking high voltage to the exhost or you may be blowing up the oxygen sensor inputs to the ECU.

The oxygen sensor is already prob screwed, b/c I have removed the cat. for this deal. so the motor is running rich already to try and get this to work.

How long is the wire to the spark plug? Too long and you could loose the high voltage that makes it spark through leakage. Keep the plug dry or it might short the high voltage out and not spark.

The plug wire is no mre than 3 foot, it runs from the back of the car down under the tail light and out thedrain plug under the car and onto the spark plug. I will water proof it when I get it working.


And there will be video if I can get it to work

You probably have a check engine light on if your cats o2 sensor is still in, but if you dont be careful you will fry the upstream o2 sensor and your car will not run at all.

And if im not mistakin I think you would have to turn the switch on and of a few times to even get a spark so the coil has time to saturate and the discharge, at least thats how old school cars ignition systems work, You can't just turn it on and expect it the spark plug to fire, you must break the circuit for it to fire.

The CEL has been on for a long time now, the o2 sensoe is still in as well, I have put thousands of miles on the car this way and nothing has happened.

I am running a blinker relay in line to break the cycle so the plug will "pulse"

Some cars pull timing when o2 sensors go out. I dont know if the xB does, but you would definatly lose the amount of hp the car usually puts out. Is the relay working, or wired correctly? Im not trying to say your have done anything worng, jus trying to help with the problem. I think a flame coming out of the box would be cool

There is only one way to wire up the relay, I am using a 2 prong, when I put the scrap wire into the spark plug wire it pulses when I ground it, but not the spark plug when I plug it back in.

You need an ignition cap (condensor) on the coil connected between ground on the cap case and the cap wire connects to the flasher side of the coil. The cap will make the coild spark a lot better - makes it resonate. Positive side of the coil goes to 12 volts and the flasher and cap connect on the negative side of the coil and ground. If you wire the coil backwards the plug with try to spark to the center electrode instead of from the center electrode. Don't gap the plug too big either.

What kind of condensor do I need to get? is there a universal one?

I will try and ground the exhaust tonight, when I get off work and see if that works first.
