It's supposed to be a coolant bypass for the throttle body. The logic being that the coolant heats up the throttle body so the air going through it is also heated and less dense. Yeah, I wouldn't do it. I don't know if the xB throttle body has a coolant line or why you should bypass it if it does because there's be a reason for it.
It's there to keep the throttle plate from potentially icing up in colder climates. 90% of folks could do without it. That said, I don't know how much it will get you as, the air spends very little time in the TB. It would be very easy to do on the XB though, just loop one coolant hose from the block in to the block out fitting. I have seen other car sites claim from as much as six hp to as little as 1/2 hp gains.

someone must have lost coolant whilst doing so and or has an air bubble which lets the car register overheating cause the sensor hits boiling air instead of hot water.
basically as everyone else says, the logic behind it is that it keeps the air cooler because its not passing through a HOT throttle body. The main purpose is, like above, to keep it from icing up in colder climates. We have been bypassing the coolant lines through throttle bodies in supras for as long as I can remember with no problem. And Im sure the person that had an overheating problem had it because of loss of coolant or a bubble like hotbox said.
