guess who's retarded?
<---this guy.
I'm in need of quieting my exhaust a bit, and someone mentioned a resonator.
I, being retarded; don't know what that is. The search function didn't help all so much, so feel free to chime in and drop some knowledge.
(btw, I have a cai, header and tsudo axelback)

A resonator would be installed by a muffler shop, typically just welded in somewhere. Its purpose is to quiet an exhaust a bit (as I understand it). And from the looks of the i/h/e setup you have, you probably would need one. Some people have done 18" and some have done 30" ... but it probably depends on how quiet you want it to be.

Its a pre muffler, makes a throatier sound with less noise. Its in the mix after the cat before the axle back. Another alternative is take it easy in the area you need to be quiet, plus that will increase your fuel economy.

The resonator acts differnetly than a chambered muffler. Chambered mufflers are shaped is such a way as to redirect the sound pressure waves back in such a way as to cancel out the incoming wave, kind of like noise cancelling headphones. The resonator is a tube with little holes all around it, then glass pack over it. The resonator absorbs sound rather than reflecting it, so the longer the resonator, the quieter it will be.
Two other options would be to get a resonating exhaust tip behind the muffler or a silencer to go in the tip. Properly tuned, the silencer acts as another muffler chamber but will increase back pressure, reducing performance.
Apexi makes what they call an "Active Tail Silencer". It is a silencer with the plug on a spring. When you step on the gas, the increased exhaust pressure moves the plug and allows for unrestricted air flow. They claim no loss in peak horsepower, I'm not sure about the rest of the band. I have one and it definately does it's job as a silencer.

thanks for the info guys! any reccomendations on brand, or doesn't that matter?

thats the onlt thing i don't like about my exaust.
i have an injen SR & a strup axle back.
together they soung awsome, but on the highway doing around 65 to 70 its just a bit to boomy.
if i do 3 to 4 mph faster or slower the sound goes away so its nothing im interested in trying to fix

get a silencer. it's the best alternative IMO.
i have the greddy ti-c and it came with a silencer, so i usually drive around with it in to keep it bearable on highways and with folks in the car. but at shows or when i want to get rowdy, i take it out.
