Help w/Auto transmission fluid change
I plan on changing the AUTOMATIC Tranny fluid on my 2005 w/57,000 miles.
I read on post below:
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=141107
That their is a 10mm plug to be removed. Anyone have a picture?
There are (2) 10mm plugs I find under my xB. One is horizontal under a black pan (closer to the front of the xB)- Is this the tranny plug?
Another plug is vertical in an aluminum housing.
Also when I fill do I fill through dipstick tube.
Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated - I am new at this. Thank you.
P.S. I plan to use Amsoil synthetic since I am out of warranty.

Sorry but there is no fluid approved by Scion but the Toyota Tech IV stuff. Why run the risk of frying your trans? Is Amsoil or Redline gonna replace the trans after it's blown? I'd get it in writing before you use it! The has to be a reason that no trans fluid companies have a replacement fluid for these transmissions.
Thanks for the reply. Redline is not approved for Auto Tranny but Amsoil does meet the Tech IV spec Toyota Spec for this application.
I am long out of warranty. I tow a trailer w/my xB and wanted to use a synthetic.
Also I have used Amsoil in the past and never had any problems in other vehicles when they recommended a product, found their quality excellent.
Could you confirm that to change all I do is pull the 10mm hex plug and then fill through the tranny dispstick hole.
Thanks again.

Yes, that is all that is involved. Also, measure how much fluid is removed to aid in filling the same amount back in.
Also, if towing a trailer you did add a tranny cooler right?? I'm thinking of adding a cooler even without towing just to lower trans temps and extend its life.
Have you checked to see if there is a filter available yet for the xB? I'm also suspecting there is a magnet inside the pan that might need to be cleaned but I won't mess with it till the next fluid change. Hopefully I can get a gasket and filter by then!
BTW, How much did a gallon of the Amsoil tech IV cost? I might use it next time. I was really pi$$ed that there were no compatible synthetic fluids available when I did my first fluid change. Thanks for the info! Jeff

Thanks for the reply.
I have not added a cooler - I thought about it - great idea - but never saw any kits. And just not had the time to research. I am not a tranny expert and was hesitant to bring it to some one not too familiar w/XB's.
Many people that use synthetic tranny fluid comment on the smoother shifts and say that the transmissions run at lower temperatures.
I try not to push it when towing the trailer. I have not found any filters - I was going to drain and fill. How many miles do you go before your drop the pan?
Great idea about measuring how much fluid is removed.
Amsoil is $26.55 (plus shipping $8.50 approx) if you pay $10 and become a preffered customer - otherwise it is $35.25 a gallon plus shipping.
(Also I am going to start using Amsoil synthetic 5w30)
Do you know what the the other hex plug is. This sits vertical (I assume it differential fluid) that is in an aluminum housing?

Hayden makes a nice small (7"X14" I think ) cooler that can be plumbed into the system. It straps to the front side of the A/C cond. It was like 25 bucks.
The syn. fluid price is about the same as I paid for the Toyota Tech IV stuff.
Not sure what the other plug is for but it has nothing to do with the fluid change. Could be diff. fluid but not sure if the auto transaxle has diff. lube in it. If it does I'll have to find out so I can change it out also. I've only got 32Kish miles so I'm not in a hurry yet.

From the Amsoil web site:
""AMSOIL ATF is recommended for transmission, hydraulic and other applications requiring any of the following specifications:
# GM DEXRON® II, III & VI
# Ford MERCON®, MERCON® V & SP
# Chrysler ATF+ through ATF+4®
# Honda Z-1 (Not for use in CVT transmissions)
# Toyota Type T and T-IV
# Mitsubishi/Hyundai Diamond SP II & III
# Allison C-3, C-4
# Caterpillar TO-2
# Voith G607, G1363
# ZF TE-ML 14A, 14B, 14C
# Mercedes Benz 236.1, 236.2, 236.6, 236.7, 236.9
# BMW 7045E
# NAG 1 & 2
# JWS 3309
# LT 71141 (ESSO)
# Nissan Matic D, J & K
# Vickers I-286S & M-2950S""
Looks like it is ok to use it in the Scion.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack your thread, but tell me about your towing experience?
What do you tow, how does the box perform?
I want to get a hitch to tow my motorcycle on a small trailer.
BTW, Amsoil is the bomb, I've used it, the tranny fluid and the other lubes, grease etc. on my musclecars (440's, 340's) and all my bikes for years, even in my 125k mile Ram van.
Thx.

Do you know how many motor oils are out there that meet the specifications for Toyotas? I assume you are not using Toyota branded motor oil? Of course not. Amsoil meets or exceeds the manufacturers specs for it's ATF just as it does for it's motor oil. So why not use it?

How does 1 synthetic product cover all those different applications of tranny fluid.? Or is there differnt Amsoil fluids for each different application. There has to be something special about each one. Otherwise there would be only 1 type of trans fluid made by all the different companies.

If someone is misinformed on this issue and actually denies a manufacturers warranty coverage because of the use of AMSOIL Universal ATF Fluid in one of the applications for which it is recommended by AMSOIL INC., the AMSOIL Warranty coverage would apply. The consumers transmission would be repaired under the AMSOIL Warranty. AMSOIL INC. and our insurance company will legally pursue the dealership or the manufacturer to recover our costs. AMSOIL INC. would not make the recommendations on our label, or issue this statement, if we were not completely confident of our position on this matter. While we cannot control what individuals say about this subject, we can and do insure that consumers can use our product with complete confidence and without risk.
That is good enough for me.

Hello, Did you find out what the other drain plug was for? I have a 2005 xB Automatic and also have the second plug right under the differential.
Could it be to just drain the diff section if changing the half axles and the refill is thru the trans dip tube?
Any info is appreciated. Thanks

@Wojtek You do realize you are replying to a thread that is 12 1/2 years old and asking a question of someone who hasn't been active on here since 2011.
I am assuming you are trying to drain your transmission fluid and, if that is the case, there are a number of threads on here that you could find using a simple search and likely videos on YouTube that show you how to do exactly just that.
Here's one...Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill

Thanks for your message. I am interested in what the second drain plug is for and does the differential share the same oil that's in the transmission, or does it have to be drained and filled separately.
The tranny is an automatic I had an 89 Corolla and the transmission and differential (automatic) were separate as far as drain and fill goes. Is the Scion xB like that?
Also I'm new to this so how do I post a new topic or question?
Thanks for your help
