Default how to properly store an engine for several years

so i have purchased a back up engine for the box and want to stash it for future use. what should i do if anything to it before it goes into hibernation? i live in so cal so mild weather. it will be wrapped in shrink wrap and covered with whatever i can find old blanket or beach towel.

there is a stickie about storing a car in the maintenance section. basically make sure everything is as clean as possible, disconnect everything, drain all fluids, and plug up all the holes to prevent anything from taking up residence in there.

sounds good to me. there shouldnt be any issues with the cylinders i guess because they are sealed and the crank journal and bearing will still have oil on them as will the cams lifters ect.ect. just realy wanted someone to back up what i thought thanks

you can always pour some oil down the spark plug holes into the cylinders

it might not be a bad idea to pop off the valve cover and spray some pb blaster or similar product all over if the cams can be an issue. same with the cylinders i guess i think oil would just run down the side and not actualy cover much

You need to add some type of cylinder treatment. A friend of mine had a motor built for his mustang, wrecked the car, and then the motor ended up sitting for a couple years. He pulled it out to use on another project and the rings had seized to the block. He ended up having to get the cylinders re-honed and had to purchase a new set of rings.

dont use PB Blaster, its a penatrating oil, use WD-40 which is a lubricant, theres a difference, PB doesnt protect where WD does. just an FYI

WD40 evaporates. Fog the cylinders with boat motor fogging oil and I'd also pull the cams so you don't have any open valves or compressed valve springs. Also tape up all the intake and exhaust ports with duct tape before shrink wrapping.
