Default Idle Adjustment Question

I have a 06 xb and a K+N SAI but the idle in neutral oscillates between about 750 and 900 rpm and I'm pretty sure it should be around 1k rpm.

What is the correct way to fix this?

Thanks in advance for your time

750-900rpm is normal 1k is slightly too fast for curb idle

and that you cannot adjust the curb idle speed anyways thats controled by the computer...

or u could turn of the ac which would lose the variation of the idle. I guess the additional load of the AC compressor throws off the correct idle rpm which causes the ecu to adjust it. It just raises it then drops too much when its higher than needed. i believe idle is at 800 too 850. but then again wat do i know.

Sorry guess I should have been more specific, I live in Indiana and don't really use the AC this time of year.

I put the SAI right after I got it, but it doesn't seem like the idle is correct, but I really don't have anything to compare it to.

The idle goes back and forth, just about every car I've owned will maintain a constant idle speed.

But if you really don't think its an issue then I won't worry about it

Thanks for the replies!

i am having the same problem, after i installed my CAI.. also with the CEL on.. i know what the problem is.. the vehicle is running to lean.. meaning your getting more air then fuel for the A/F ratio.. i need to know is there a way to tune the injectors.. or fuel system to give the right fuel amount so its running "Stoich".

i tried adjusting the throttle cable to open it up a little but realized the computer controls this.. but it did make the gas pedal stiffer.. which is to my liking..

You shouldn't have any problem after installing an intake. The computer will automatically adjust the mix. My manual xB with Fujita SRI idles around 700 RPM and fluctuates maybe 10 RPM. An auto would be slightly higher but should also be mostly constant RPM.

Is it an actual K&N intake or a knock off intake with a K&N filter? Someone with a knock off complained they couldn't get their car to run correctly either. Put on the stock air box and see if it runs fine. If so, it's the intake (air leak in your install somewhere or just bad design). If not, it's the MAF sensor.

Once you get it warmed up let is sit at idle with all the power using accessories off and it should settle down to 650rpm nice and steady. If it doesn't then you have some injector and emission issues and I would start with some gas treatment and a temperature check of the coolent - 184-188 degrees F is normal.

It's an actually K+N, been on there for about 6 months, at first it was doing the trac/engine/whatever else light thing quite a bit and it seems to have adjusted to that atleast it hasn't tripped that for about a month. It was dong it after only a couple of days after I reset the fuel injector at first. But the idle deal has been a constant so I as getting to the point where I didn't think it was going to 'learn' an idle and stick to it.

I've used intakes and K+N filters on my cars for years and they always run a little differently because of the obvious change in air flow.

Guess I was just mostly curious if there was a way to change the idle a little and make it so it doesn't cycle fast and slow, fast and slow. The cycle takes a couple of seconds so I didn't really think anything was 'wrong'. I'm just a tinkererer Figured I could try to mess with the ICU, but it doesn't sound like a real common way of doing things.

I'll just keep an eye on it and see if it starts to improve and maybe give my dealer a hollar, though they don't seem to be all that quick to tell the do-it-yourselfer much here...

Okay again thanks for the replies, off to put on my sensatracs *grins smoothly*

Default got wandering idle?

Seems a normal tendency for the box's little motor. Check SEARCH for "grounding kit" and you'll probably find some hits (especially from an SL guy, MIKOCHU). Apparently the Little Engine That Could wants a v-e-r-y constant ground in order to maintain a stable idle. My 05 xb was ranging between maybe 500-1000 RPM before, but now runs pretty much halfway between after I installed Mikochu's ground kit.

Most likely, a grounding kit will NOT make your stereo sound better, will NOT make your headlights brighter, will NOT get you better gas mileage or improve your sex life (and it definitely didn't make my hair grow back). It just keeps your box's system voltage more steady by means of a more constant ground. Good luck--and try making that kit up yourself with Micochu's link https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=29261. It's easy, relatively cheap, and a worthwhile mod.

You all should hear my xB purr - rock steady and no pulses from piston fire or intake - just sort of a hiss - strangest sounding engine I ever heard. I still say you have some fuel mixture issues if it will not idle steady. There should be a throttle stop adjustment to set the idle speed where the cable connects. The grounding kit usually helps the tC because of the cableless throttle that it uses.

You said it has been awhile? try changing the plugs, try a higher octane gas ( 87 to 89), and try the grounding kit.

I have the K&N Typhoon system as well, make sure your MAF is clean and yur not over/under oil the ilter, are you wearing the sock? during intall did you disconnect the battery? try re-setting using the EFI fuse?

I only get a little wander on my idle when the plugs need changing.
