Default K&N Typhoon...8.1 horsepower gain?....

Damn. If this is true, it is almost as much as the friggin supercharger. On K&N's site, they show the dyno at 8.1 horsepower@5450 rpm in 3rd gear...ver impressive. Does anyone out there have one?

I thought that was impressive too. There were two things that concerned me.

1. They do not show the Torque curve
2. The dyno seems to indicate that the VVT-i is at a different RPM level. Not sure if that is accurate. Stock appears to kick in after 5,500 RPM, while the K&N run kicks in at just over 5,250.

I am still trying to decide myself between the Typhoon and the AEM CAI.

i hear good things bout K&N. 8.1 hp... i might believe 5.5 or something but 8.1 hp seems a little fishy. but wat im more concerned with is the TQ curve. how much did that jump up all you really have to worry about.

AEM... if im goin to spend a little more into an CAI, i rather wait for the INJEN.

I've seen the dyno chart and the claimed HP number is at a little blip around 5500 RPM. Then it drops off to to about 5 HP. Most of the way along the curve -- like in the rage normal people usually drive -- there's only a 0-to-4 HP boost.

Truth is, most intakes do pretty much the same thing. They produce their benefits in a narrow RPM range. I real world driving, you're not going to feel any difference between aftermarket intakes, because you're not going to feel much difference between stock and aftermarket in the first place. Most of the improvement is psychological and cosmetic.

two things here I'll be more concern on:

The actual low end TQ gain,
and fuel economy.

I think if you disconnected everything and ran the car with no air filter at all, you still wouldn't get 8 hp... So I don't believe it....

Any hp numbers that companies provide are the same as those diet supplement commercials that claim you'll lose 50 pounds in a week... They'll say anything to make a sale

it's called runnin the car with a/c on for the baseline and then turn the a/c off for the intake run, just a guess this is how alot of companies inflate their gains

Yup... A/C on, with the hood shut, and the wind fan in the shop turned off...

I'm sure they manipulate those dynos a million different ways...

8.1 hp with an intake?

I believe this. They said 12 whp on the STi and a bunch of people took the car to the dyno with just the intake to see if K&N claimes were true and they gained exactly what K&N said. Plus the dynos looked almost identical in terms of the power curve. So, I got one on my STi after reading all those dyno posts and am very happy with it.

As it happens, I just installed this very same CAI on my xB yesterday!

Took me about an hour; hardest part was trying to get the filter onto the tube . You have to lay on the ground, raise your arms and screw it on

Yes, sound is definitely enhanced!

HP gain? Not much, but my butt dyno. You notice a boost between 4-6K RPM, which is also when it's the loudest.

It's a nice product, very well documented, and carries a great warranty.

Only issue I have is now my idle bounces between 400-600RPM Checked all of the hoses and the tightness of the clamps........... resetting my ECU(again) overnight to see if that helps.

If this truly gains me 8.6HP and I don't notice it that much, I may switch to something a little easier to maintain: the Blitz or Greddy come to mind.
