Has anyone tried this swap. Does it mate up or are mods needed?

From what I understand the tranny will bolt up to the stock engine. You will however need to notch the chassis to get the tranny to fit, as well as have new axleshafts made. But it is possible to do.

As a general rule with Toyota engines/trannys, the engine block will accept any tranny from that engine series. For example, a 3E engine will accept a 4E or 5E tranny (and vice versa), a 1ZZ will accept a 2ZZ tranny (and vice versa). In the first example the engine series is "E", in the second it is "ZZ". Now if someone tried to bolt it up & it fit, it may have been just luck.

Celica GTS motors (2ZZ-GE) use C160 series transmissions. xA's, xB's and Echo's use C150 series transmissions. You can even gut out a C160 trans and stuff the internals into a C150 series trans. housing. Look up Wraith on this forum he's done it. I'm just too lazy to search for his thread right now. And you do have to notch about 1 1/2 inches out of your drivers side frame rail to do this swap, but its well worth it.

This is probably the biggest thing that would make me consider another car over my xB so if it could be done relatively easily it would make a world of difference.

If you want more info do a search for the author named "Wraith". Read all his transmission posts. He knows what he's talking about, I know him personally and I've seen his car with the 1NZ-FE, Levin trans, and supercharger and it hauls ___!

?
sure it would, you wouldn't have to do 4k on the tach when doing 80 on the interstate to begin with,a nd that would lead to better MPG on road trips.
you would also have a higher top end, i my self don't know why anyone would want to go faster. ive had mine to 115 and that was plenty fast enough for me.

you can get the same results if you swapped out with a echo tranny all your doing is changing the final drive ratio

Actually it's not the same as changing to an Echo tranny because we (xB owners) don't want to loose the gears we have and the great spacings-we just want a reasonable highway gear on top (that would be the 6th one).

problem with notching the frame is you are altering the crumple zone.... i have thought long and hard about this swap, but i think i would be better off just swapping our 4.3 gears with a yaris' 3.7... or there is the trd 4.0, but i have only been able to find the price in yen...

Although it would be really cool to see in person and drive if some one has it.

my research shows that the final drive for the yaris is swappable, it uses the same c50 transmission, the difference is the final drive, that will definitely drop your cruising rpm. i think you can pick up the output shaft and gear for around $450 new from dealer. if you are uncertain about the swap, just go to the dealer and test drive a yaris...
