i've had 3 quarts sitting in my garage for months guess I should take it to a buddies shop or go pay for it to get done.

 

I think that is quite a fair interval.

I did mine after 13 months and thought the old fluid looked like crap and had a ever-so-slight 'burnt' smell to it. I will be doing mine every 1.5 - 2 (15-22.5K mi.) years myself, but it is probably overkill unless you will be keeping the box for many, many years. It is so easy to do and takes only 10 minutes or so. I see it as cheap insurance.

Thats a good price - I got hit with the $10 handling charge ...but free shipping ...go figure. Anyhoot - The fluid came in today. Good service from summitracing.com - overall I only paid a $5 premium so that doesnt sound that bad.

 

just a question are the transmission fluid and the differential share the same oil or are they in their own spot??? and is this the fluid that you guys are talkin bout and should i buy 3 of these???

FYI - I know the manual says you can use GL4 or 5, but drain the 5 that is factory fill and replace with 4 ASAP. Our manual trans has brass syncros and 5 is corrosive to them. I emailed Scion and got their response that 4 is a better choice than the 5:

Im sure the reason they use 5 is because it is cheaper to stock only 1 fluid than 2.

No. I changed the diff fluid in the box this weekend to mt-90. Shifts are much smoother.

just loaded up my box with the redline and it's shifting great.

no joke about romanova's tip about unplugging the fill plug first. my mechanic undid the drain plug first before i could say anything and it glug glug glugged, then he took off the fill plug and tranny fluid gushed everywhere.

 

Just did the change over and I am very impressed..shifts are much smoother !!

Also, I went the way of removing the reverse sensor on the top of the tranny, you dont have to remove the splash shield if you do it this way, and just refill through the sensor hole..quick and easy.

a little hint...if you will drive your xB for a couple of miles and warm up the fluid it makes the change go even quicker since the fluid will be thinner when its warm...

 

What did you use to remove the reverse sensor? Is it also a 24mm? I just changed mine out last night and the 24mm socket didn't seem to fit (then again, there's a bracket from my intake kind've in the way).

I'd already taken off the splash guard and fill plug before I realized i was not going to be able to loosen the drain plug without the socket. So I took our other car to the store and got a 24mm socket. Tried to fit it on the reverse sensor, but it seemed too small. So I did the whole mess with the pump. Which was not half as messy as draining the old fluid!

I was shocked to see there is no magnet on the drain plug? The two trucks I had before had magnets built in to the trans and differential drain plugs. They ALWAYS had particles on the magnets when I changed the fluid. The magnetic engine oil drain plug I put in my xB has particles (more of a slime really) and it's filtered. I can't believe Toyota didn't give us a transmission drain plug magnet.

 

Toyota nor Honda use tranny filters that are replaceable..they have screens that are internal.

 

This thread is about the MANUAL transmission. No filters, no screens, and apparently not even a magnet.
