Default new owner of experienced xA with an issue

New to this Forum after obtaining a sweet 2005 xA with only 250000 miles ;). If not for the automatic trans, would be perfect fit here. but will do as our backup if can figure out an issue that showed up after about three weeks of ownership.
Starts and runs fine. But last two trips of about an hours total each driving with 2-4 stops along the way, the battery signal came on after 2nd or 3rd stop and did not shut off. Checked when home and battery was not charging, but would take a charge. No power from alternator, fusable links check ok. Start again after charging battery up, and was getting a charge from alternator (as per meter), but stopped again next trip....so intermittent and hard to find. Realize the regulator is internal to the alternator, and need to lift engine to remove alternator to bench check. Could be a heat thing?
Don't have a great covered space to work on this, and at moment is not a big priority as finished brakes on my '06 Matrix so have daily driver up and usable. But if anyone has had this issue and there is a common cause that can be addressed prior to going as far as removing alternator, please let me know. If we do need to remove alternator, would most likely get a working repacement and use that.
Appreciate input, and thanks for being here.
