Opinions, post here!!
Hey guys,
So i've been debating on this coming spring what to do. I know how both set ups will act, and so on. I just need some opinions on what you guys would like to see me do.
1. Power Enterprise s/c, greddy e-manage, Blitz atf cooler.
2. ZPI head, Zpi pistons, ZPI pulley, blitz atf cooler, greddy e-manage
These two options are based on the money i will have on the spring, i could add more but $$$ stops some where. I'd really like to go boosted, but at the same time my experience is more kept in the n/a area. Not to mention, this is my first automatic build up and im just not quite sure if which route i want to go. Please don't comment with the boost will kill a/t crap, it won't. Not with the synthetic oil and atf cooler it wont. Neither set up will, so please feed back away!
Oh, with existing mods this would be my actual set up as far as motor goes:
1. p/e s/c, dc 4-1 header, greddy e-manage, blitz atf cooler, jic exhaust, hotchkis strut.
2. dc sport 4-1 header, hotchkis strut, aem cai, jic exhaust, zpi head, zpi pistons, zpi light crank pulley, blitz atf cooler and greddy e-manage.
Of course, all motor will give me more mods. However, both set ups do give me near same whp gains. Boost might give me a little more, but then again it depends what gains there will be with zpi's box once its said and done.
annnd feedback!

if it were me, and I could afford either option...I would go 100% NA and see where it leads with all of those new parts that are being pushed out by ZPI
then once you get to that point, everything is built-up so if you choose to go s/c or t/c after that your fine...yes I know theres 2 versions of the pistons a NA and a fi version so that might be a little tricky...but even the NA version would work fine with fi wouldnt it? Hell if the stock can handle mild boosts so could that one
this is something I may do someday myself, upgrading internal parts once more is out in the market

The 11:1 compression pistons work work alright with boost, but i would swap them for the 8:5:1 just to ensure saftey of the piston, motor and over-all set up.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback and others better step it up through out the day! I want to see some strong points, and words. heh,

thats a good question. Your tanny will hold but you wont feel the boost as much as a manual transmission. If money isnt an option and you like boost go the boost route. If you want to keep your car as a daily driver and have 0 problems i would definately recommened N/A. Im ALL about N/A cars i love seeing a car rev to 10,000 (obviously not oour case, but just an example). I love hearing the scream of the revs and just seeing that engine build up power.... awsome. Boost will most likely be more expensive and ive heard of people with A/T and Blitz S/C that go down the 1/4 in 17+ seconds (kinda slow), especially after you spend over $4,000 on parts...
I dont think its a good idea to boost pistons that are at an 11:1 compression ratio, just doesnt seem right, go one route or the other. Be sure what you do dont go buying high compression pistons then slap on a S/C and expect it not to break... IMO it will.

As for 1/4: 16.4 @ 83mph with i/h/e, removed backseats and spare tire. I believe i still hold the record for n/a autotranny time for the xb.
However, i autocross a lot more than i do straight track. 1/4 got old fast, autox is where its at. I can already beat several cars out of my class due to the fact i can handle around the cones better than they can. I just need to work on my straight away sprints and i will be able to put down better times.
Thanks for feedback. I also love the n/a feel. My gs-r (prior to xb) i built n/a. close ratio 5 speed, stage 2 clutch, cam and ecu. new head, pistons, fly wheel, 4-2-1 header custom full exhaust, tranny upgrades short shifter. suspen mods, frame mods, so on so on. My bottom result was 231whp, ran mostly high 13's until my custom gears went in, then i was runing mostly low 13s. I believe my best time was 13.27 or 13.3, some where a long those lines. Daily driver as well.
Oh, point of sharing was you said 10k redline, i had bumped mine to 8,400rpm.

Start an N/A revolution
That way if you do manage to whoop up on some on you can say it is stock with just an intake and exhuast
Kidding aside I would like to do N/A I think it would be better in the long run (i.e. maint.). As far a popularity goes seems like everyone is trying to do F/I break the mold and show it is all motor baby!!!

about time i see more responces!
Its a tough call for because, i've always wanted to do a boosted motor but i love building n/a cars, theres just something about them. Plus, n/a you can keep it a real sleeper with just minor clean modifications outside. So i'm still not sure, but it seems the crowd so far is split too! Half want f/i and half want n/a.
Lets see if it goes more one way than another in some more posts!

Greddy s/c wait? I'll have to see what gains they have and how the kit is designed before i take that up, good suggestion though. I'll look into it more.
Thanks everybody, keep them coming.
