Default Perrin pulley=belt squeak?

Shortly after installing a perrin pulley on my 05 xB, the belts started lightly chirping under low RPM. I took it to the dealer and they said it needed belts. Well, they look brand new to me, but being just over 60,000 miles, I decided to get the new ones. Well, the slight chirping turned into all out screeching when cold and more of the older problem.

The dealer that installed the belts said it was due to the fact that the crank pulley is aluminum and that "no manufacturer, not even Ferarri, uses aluminum pulleys for the crank"....

Well, i need your advice...Do you think it is the pulley? Please help! Thanks in advance!

I had mine with tat kind of noise also.
My mechanic tried to find which belt making tat noise, usually it's the front belt (Alternator, water pump), then just re-adjust the alternator placement, until no more noise or chirping.

Maybe you'll need to check on tat.

I also bought a new belt, and it was making tat screeecchinngg noise at low rpm or when starting to move. At mid to high rpm, no noise at all.
Gud luck.

Thanks for the response. The belt is as tight as it will get. I had another dealership check and retighten it. I guess I'll either have to live with it or put the OEM pulley back on...HMMM.

PERRIN OWNERS PLEASE RESPOND!!!!

There is this stuff called belt dressing that helps slipping belts not slip. If you are careful spraying and don't over do it, it doesn't seem to make much of a mess and it will help.

If your alternator or water pump is not running as smooth as it should that could add to the slippage as well. Check your radiator fluids-if it's running way too heavy on water it makes the water pump have more friction-less lubrication.

Ive been running a perrin pulley for almost 2 years and have never had it make any noise. I'd double and triple check the tension....

Well, he did mine without any belt dressing. He just tighten it as much it could get, then little by little (perhaps half a centimetre at a time) reducing the tension until the sound goes away. It took an hour to find that sweet spot.

Same here...I have been running it for over 2 years with 40,000 miles and have yet to have any issues with it.

yeah, i had a perrin on my wifes 06.5... it lasted a week before that poorly made, poorly balanced chunk of ____ took half of the crank with it.

greybox...I have heard of that stuff you refer to as "belt dressing"....LOL. Trust me, I tried it before dropping 80 bucks on belts. I used it (sparingly) on the new belts as well.

Shocktherapy....Sounds like a bad install to me. Sorry to hear this happened though. No problems here like that...just a squeak or chirp here and there.

so could the belt be TOO TIGHT? Maybe I need to look it over againand adjust it myself before taking it back to the dealer

The belts could be too tight depending how they re-installed everything. Ive seen Toyota techs do some weird things in the time I spent working in dealerships....
