Is it possible to to get or make high performance exhaust system but have it be as quiet as stock or quieter? I like to idea of performance and looks but I totally hate that ricer fart sound.

You wont get as quiet as stock with a performance exhaust ... The best thing out right now is the Strup Exhuast ... It has good performance and is pretty quiet ...

You can just get a new tip, they are pretty cheap and tons of different styles, but it wont help performance any, just looks

The problem is if you want performance you need bigger diameter exhaust and a high flow muffler ... that combination does not equal stock sound ...

Thats not totally true, the Tanabe axle back gives you performance and quiet at the same time. Thats the only muffler that I know of that is quiet and gives you a performance gain.

It also makes a difference which direction the exhaust is aimed - which is why most big trucks aim theirs straight up...

(I remember a friend who had a '69 Dodge Hemi Charger down in Ft. Worth - the exhaust on that thing sounded like a HUGE berserk Electrolux vacuum. No roar or growl, just a massive WHOOOOooooosh.)

Stylis,

I'm just curious,

How quiet/loud is your stylis axleback compared to the tanabe?
Also, how does it compare in power performance?

I bought yours (5-speed version) because it gives some fart on take-off but is quiet at cruising speeds.

I've been happy with it ever since.

My auto axle back is very deep at all times except when you hit 65mph, than it goes quiet. The tanabe exhaust system is just quiet all the time, but the HP gains still doesn't beat out the gains that I have from my auto axle back.

I know there are quiet exhaust on the market, but nothing like stock ... The strup exhaust is quiet ... But you won't get a performance exhaust that would sound like stock ...

Ok, I can only give my experience w/ the Tanabe Hypermedallion axleback, and my Magnaflow custom center exit exhaust.

The Magnaflow muffler I used is very similar to the axlebacks I had made up thru Michael's Mufflers for $200 installed. The Magnaflow numbers are 14832, 14814, and 14829. The only diff between the aforementioned three are the tips.

The Tanabe is so quiet at 4k rpm, that I couldn't hear it inside the car w/ the stereo off. No resonating, no nothing. I only heard the air being sucked by the INJEN SR. At 3k rpm w/o load, it was around 78 dB. The Magnaflow set-up was around 83dB+/-.

I also changed out my OEM resonator, and its definitely lower in tone, throatier, and a bit louder.

If not for having a different set-up w/ my exhaust, I would prolly still have the Tanabe axleback on my xB. I have seen the Strup axleback, and will either run that set-up or the Injen set-up once/if I get my xA. Or I may try something else I was thinking about.

I'm not an exhaust expert by any means, just giving my experiences with what worked for me, and what I have now.

I forgot to mention that my current set-up is 2.25 inch from the resonator back.

Does an exhaust exist for the tC that produces power but is also quiet? Is there anything out there that would work with headers and intake? I currently have the TRD exhaust w/ headers and intake and I'm about ready to throw the stock exhaust back on--the sound is horrible.

I have the TRD exhaust, and it is pretty darn quiet unless you really get on it. I did a db test on it, and the loudest it ever got through all the rpm ranges was 98db. for comparison, my goped with a 23cc weedwacker engine ran at 130db.

The only prob i've had with the TRD is that the donut that goes inbetween the two pieces of pipe kept blowing out, so i had mine permanently welded on, and havent had a prob since.

My cousin Randode tells me Precision is the way to go--I had him call you guys regarding the full cat back system. Have you had a chance to try the cat back out on a tC with headers and intake? If not, would cat back sound just as bad or worse w/ my current setup? What type of gains can be had w/ Precision's axle back? Thanks for your help!

umm can be false too little back pressure can make some cars run worse.....especially if not tuned properly

I wasnt talking about back pressure ... but with performance you need bigger diameter piping ... I know loss of back pressure will cause a car to perform worse ... ALL aftermarket exhaust are bigger diameter ...
