My box gets pretty gentle usage and I use a Synthetic Blend (Castrol Syntec Blend). During my three "Free" (really, prepaid with the purchase of the vehicle...) oil changes, there was only a $6 surcharge for doing that.

I recommend a synthetic or synthetic blend depending on how hard you make the engine work.

I've been using Mobil 1 since my first oil change. 93,000+ miles.

After my 3 freebies were over, I switched to Mobil 1. It provides better lubrication and protection than dino oil. I would also use an OEM Toyota oil filter as it helps prevent oil starvation at start up.

Synthetics are a good choice. Keep in mind that they get dirty just like regular oil and should really be changed at the same intervals for this reason. Another important consideration....It is generally not reccommended to put synthetic oils in a new or freshly rebuilt engine...5000 miles use is good rule of thumb before switching to synthetics.

That actually makes some sense. Is it absolutely necessary, I don't think so but it would give you very close to 100% synthetic in the crack case instead of mostly synthetic with a little residual regular oil.

I agree with that, its not necessary, by the 2 synthetic oil change most of the regular oil has pretty much been flushed out. Just make sure you get a good Synthetic oil and a good oil filter, don't go cheap on oil filters.

I'm using Quaker State synthetic right now, because it was buy one get one free at Advance Auto. Good deal. Generally I use Castrol Syntec Blend.

Synlube - change it once and forget about it for 150,000 miles or 15 years. 11,900 miles and still running great.
