Won't crank, starter? Ideas?

Won't crank, starter? Ideas?
I know there's plenty of threads on this but wanted to see if I'm thinking the right thing here.
So so I stopped at a gas station to fill up my 2005
xb, when I went to start the car back up, it cranked for a second then stopped on its own. Now when you try to start it absolutely nothing happens. All I hear when I turn the key is the fuel pump. thought it may have been a bad battery, as mine was pretty old and getting corroded. New battery did not fix the problem. Tried smacking the starter with a wrench but didn't make a difference.
Is this his most likely the starter or maybe a fuse or relay?

The start motor has the starter relay built into it
http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/s...ter+motor,4152
The relay is supposed to throw the shaft out to engage with the flywheel and provide current to spin the motor. I think if you short the 2 terminals the starter will spin (when someone turns the key), but not throw out. --> be very careful <--
That will tell you the motor is good and it is probably a bad solenoid.
The price of a new solenoid is the same as a new motor assy
http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/s...+solenoid,4188
and I don't think they sell a solenoid repair kit, so most people just replace the starter assy.
Back at the factory, they take the solenoid apart and replace a big copper washer and send it back out as remanufactured
The avalon has a repair kit, I've used it http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/t...epair+kit,4184
