Default help w/ turbo

hey guys, i did a search but i couldnt find anything on google or the website, my problem is i dont know what its called. i really wanna trubo my xA, and i was thinking that i would really like to do the turbo that replaces the exhaust, i dont know what it is called, and ive tried various searches but couldnt find anything. i
saw it in an import magazine a while ago, and when i was thinking of a turbo the other day i was watching rides where they had three diffrent teams do up an HHR. well on of the teams used the turbo and i jolted my memory,

-does anyone know what it is called?

-how hard it is to install? is it any good?

I can't think of what its called right off the top of my head, but yes i have seen this.

Here's the problem with this setup: A turbo's exhaust turbine dosen't only spin from the velocity of the waste gases. Thermal heat plays a significant role as well! Heat IS energy! With this setup, not only do you lose potential energy from EGT, but lags due to restriction from the cat (if you planned on running one) and the piping by putting it at the end of the system. Like sucking soup out of a spoon with a straw, haha. Yet another problem with this kit is the intake temp. They say that due to the length of the charge plumbing running from the back of the car to the front that this in itself acts as an intercooler......hmmm, not quite. Lastly the position of the turbo leaves it vulnurable to scraping, or rocks kicking up onto it, etc.

I really dunno know why anyone would wanna deviate from the efficent and traditional way other than trying to be different..........oh yeah, and that would be a LONG oil and return line on that sucker, ha. With out a oil scavanger pump hooked onto that oil line you can say bye bye to ur seals inside the turbo and say hello to blow by.

Don't let the nay sayers get to ya...it's a pretty sharp package. Read up on it then decide which way you want to go. Not sure if they offer a package for the xA, but they may.

Also here's a article from Popular HotRodding Magazine you may enjoy.

http://popularhotrodding.com/tech/0411phr_sts/

Here's a quote from the article

" The exhaust gases flow through the manifolds, past the catalytic converter, through the exhaust and into the Garret turbo. The exhaust gas velocity increases about 4,000 percent inside the turbo housing causing the turbine to spin at over 100,000 rpm."

Alright there has already been huge debates about these systems before especailly on like the LS1 sites. Heres the deal...these systems can actually be quite effective. Is there a long oil feed and return line in these systems...of course the turbo is mounted at the end of the car. Will the length of the intake tubing actually act as an intercooler...yes and no. Due to the length of the intake piping and the under car airflow this WILL actually act as a kind of heat exchanger, as effective as a normal front mount intercooler well of course not. Now as for the cat restrciting the flow. People act like the cat is some huge cork in the system, in modern cars the cat doesn't actually restrict the flow all that much, while it is true that it is the most restrictive part its not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. The main reason you don't see these on imports is because there is no need. Remote Mount Turbo Systems were designed for V8 cars so that they didn't have to run all sorts of crazy exhaust tubing at the front of the car and loose gound clearance. However to say that these systems are inefficient and not nearly as good is just a false statement. Also lets not forget the stealthy nature of a set up like this, but thats just an added bonus.

well ill get more info on it, we shall see, ill probably have to go buy some $200 car for when mine is out of commision while im working on it. i guess in the end the only thing that counts is the dyno, so we shall see, it dosnt seem to expensive, but if it is ill just do the blitz supercharger

If you are gonna design your own system I think you should pick up the book "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell...it is the turbo bible. Theres a lot more to it than pickin a turbo and buying an intercooler...once you read the book you will know what im talking about...if you have any questions about going turbo leme know
