Manifold options
Recently I acquired a Garrett T3 turbo off of an '85 Saab 900 turbo for the best price: $0. I've been working on trying to piece-meal a cheap (as in price), low-boost turbo setup for my xA using this thing.
Let me preface this by saying that currently this is more of a thought experiment for me. I'm one of those people who like to plan a project out far in advance to try and prevent as many issues as possible. Obviously one can never plan for everything, but thinking things through ahead of time certainly does help
. As such, I would appreciate constructive input, as long as it's not "why don't you just buy the turbotoyotas kit". I'd be perfectly pleased with the kits out there, but I'm more of a DIYer and it's difficult to pass up using a free turbo
.
Anywho, back to the topic at hand. I've been looking for manifolds to accommodate this turbo. The problem that I've been running into is the fact that it, obviously, uses a T3 flange. I've run across a couple of manifolds out there that use the T3 flange (specifically the OBX and turbonetics, although honestly I've only found one distributer online that has the turbonetics t3 for the 1nzfe, so I have my doubts about that one). Unfortunately both of these manifolds require an external wastegate and my turbo has an internal wastegate. Does anybody know of a manufacturer out there that makes a T3 1nzfe manifold for a turbo with an internal wastegate??
I have a couple other solutions that I'm hesitant to try out. I could convert the turbo itself to an use an external wastegate, although that's something I have yet to do in my previous turbo excursions. I suppose I could also convert one of the manifolds by welding the external wastegate whole shut with a plug of some sort...not something that's the most elegant. The last option is to have a custom manifold built, although I'd like to avoid that because of the potential nightmare it poses...especially because I live in the boonies and honestly don't know of anybody here that I'd trust enough to make me one/design me one, plus I'd be scared of the cost to build a custom manifold (again, something I haven't looked into in my previous excursions).

RevHard and Turbo Toyotas both produce manifolds to use a T25/T28 based turbine housing. I think your best bet is to speak to Todd @ Turbo Toyotas ans see if he can have a T3 flange welded on the manifold instead of the T25 flange. Another option is to can the Saab T3 turbo and look for a Nissan SR20DET based T25 or T28. You can usually find these turbos for less than $150.00 on eBay. This would be a great match to the 1NZFE.
